Within hours of becoming a national hero, a viral video star and the top topic on Twitter, Charles Ramsey talked about having trouble getting sleep. It wasn’t because of all the excitement that followed his knocking down a Cleveland neighbor’s door, freeing three women and a little girl who police say were held hostage for years.

Instead, Ramsey told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Tuesday, it was about knowing he had lived for a year near the captive women on the city’s West Side.

“Up until yesterday the only thing that kept me from losing sleep was the lack of money, I could have done this last year, not this hero stuff.” Ramsey says.

If you’re like most people, you’re constantly monitoring your smartphone as you type on your computer.

Then, once you get home, you surf the web while you watch your favorite TV shows.

This kind of device juggling is a ubiquitous practice, and one that has a name: Researchers call it “media multitasking,” and warn that it might actually be affecting your mental health.

Earlier research has linked information overload—caused by too many devices spitting out too much stimulus—to both depression and social anxiety.

In a new study, experts at Michigan State University sought to uncover the role that media multitasking might play in fostering that link. To find out, they recruited 319 people and asked each to fill out psychological profiles and questionnaires related to their use of popular media, including television, music, email, text messaging, and web surfing.

The last thing you want to do when you get home from a long day of work is to do more work. Some days are more stressful than others so make sure you try to unwind and relax a little before continuing with your evening routine.

If you find it difficult to wind down after a demanding workday try these 8 tips to help you shift from office to home mode.

Like what you’re reading? Then LIKE us on Facebook!

Get Comfortable

As soon as you get in from work, change into different attire. This will have an immediate relaxing effect. Change into your most comfortable clothing once you get out of the shower. Pajamas are an excellent choice, especially if you get home from work late at night.

Take Time To Daydream

With instant access to information we seem to have lost the art of daydreaming. The daydreaming process is vital to the creativity process as well as reordering the working memory and rebalancing our energy levels.

Take Care Of Your Body

Exercising is an excellent way to re-energize your body after a tiresome day at work. If you have a sedentary job that requires sitting at a desk for long hours, choose a form of exercise that involves moving your legs, like walking or jogging. If your job keeps you on your feet for hours on end, choose a gentle exercise that you can perform while sitting down such as stretching or yoga.

Eat Well

The problem is that, after a while, it can damage our health and well-being. Surprisingly, stress can affect everything from our emotions to our immune system to our skin to our organs. So with everything you have going on, how can you relax?

Fast!

Here are some quick ways to feel better…

Just breathe…Practice breathing in through your nose slowly and out through your mouth. Whenever you feel overwhelmed practice breathing.

Just think…nothing is as bad as you think it is. Try not to take things so seriously, and if you make a mistake, it’s not the end of the world.

Just move…when you feel yourself getting upset or anxious, just get up and get active for 10 minutes. Go for a walk, stretch, do a little yoga, go talk to someone in a nearby cubicle, go to the gym, it doesn’t matter. Try to burn off that nervous energy in a healthy way.

It’s very hard to avoid stress. Between work, family and our overall busy lives, we’re all being pulled in a million directions. The problem is that too much stress can hurt your body, and lead to certain preventable illnesses…and even obesity.

Did you know that stress can also damage your skin? If you’re experiencing the below symptoms, stress may be to blame:

Celebrate Your Health! LIKE BDO on Facebook!

Common symptoms of stressed skin include dryness, dullness and/or breakouts. But why? What can you you do for a healthier complexion?

The Stress Hormone

When we are stressed, a hormone called cortisol is released and wreaks havoc on our bodies. Research has found that it leads to a dangerous accumulation of fat around our organs, and too much cortisol has an effect on our skin as well. Caused by lack of sleep and other stress, once cortisol is released into your body, it can cause many different problems .

Lines and Wrinkles

As soon as cortisol is released by the body, sugar levels in the blood increase. We know that sugar spikes are especially bad for diabetics, but increased blood sugar also promotes a process called glycation in our skin. Glycation damages our skin’s collagen, causing it to become rigid, which increases lines and wrinkles.

Dry & Damaged Skin

In addition to causing glycation, cortisol also decreases our skin’s natural production of hyaluronic acid, which serves as a natural moisturizer for our skin. Even more, cortisol compromises the skin’s barrier, which allows even more hydration to seep out. And when skin is dehydrated, the enzymes in our skin that work to repair the damage done every day don’t work as well.

Poor Complexion

We have all been susceptible to the effects of stress, which can manifest itself in a number of ways, depending on the person and the severity of the situation at hand. Warning signs of stress can be physical, emotional, mental, occupational, social and even spiritual.

Following are the top ten sources of stress. Which ones have you been battling with and how do you cope?

1. Work

We’re all aware that a person’s job can be a huge source of stress—usually a result of the amount of time spent there each week, overwhelming workloads or a difficult boss. If a person does not like their job, has a long commute or has altercations with her co-workers, they can experience even more stress. Getting fired from a job is said to be one of the most stressful events in a person’s life.

2. Lack of Finances

Having no money to meet your basic personal needs or the needs of your family is stressful indeed. However the source of stress is not the lack of money by itself. Rather people are more interested in their own survival.

3. Health

Personal health issues can be stressful on both children and adults. Working to get well, worrying about medical costs or dealing with an unexpected health crisis or chronic illness can all bring on stress. The sad part is that stress itself contributes to disease. In fact, the World Health Organization estimates that within the next 10 years, stress-related conditions like depression will rank as the second leading cause of disability worldwide.

4. Personal Relationships

Everyone is stressed at times by personal relationships, even when relationships are basically good. Couples argue, parents and children fight and occasionally conflict among friends or co-workers can create stress.

Stress doesn’t just rattle your nerves and put you on edge. The effects of stress can include forgetfulness, sexual problems, insomnia, and hair loss.

When most of us think of the physical effects of stress, our minds jump to common complaints like headaches and upset stomachs.

Stress, however, can affect many aspects of physical and mental health, ranging from hair, teeth, and skin to memory and concentration skills, and even how well we sleep. The good news is while these problems may seem serious, stress relief can lead to real improvements in your overall health and well-being.

Reduced Immunity

Excessive stress and anxiety can lead to reduced immunity and an increased chance of getting sick. This link between stress and the body’s ability to fight disease may go all the way back to childhood. Researchers have found that adolescents who were abused or experienced other, intensely stressful situations as children were less able to ward off certain infections even years later. It’s crucial to keep daily stress under control as much as possible to offset the effects of past stress and encourage good health in the present.

Loss Of Focus

Bad news for stressed-out students cramming for exams — it turns out that being under pressure can affect how well our brains work. Specifically, one small study showed that medical students studying for board exams had more trouble focusing their attention than others who were not stressed. The good news? A month after the stressful period was over, the stressed group’s mental skills returned to normal.

Sexual Problems

The effects of stress can extend to the bedroom. While most men may experience erectile dysfunction from time to time, when it happens frequently, its underlying cause should be investigated. Causes of erectile dysfunction can include diabetes, high blood pressure, side effects of certain medications, and chronic stress. Stress can also contribute to a loss of sexual desire in both men and women.

Stress-Induced Hair Loss

Some amount of hair loss is normal — strands fall out over time and get replaced by new ones. However, when you’re under physical or emotional stress the normal shedding of 100 or so hairs a day can speed up to the point where half to three-quarters of your hair can fall out. Known as telogen effluvium, this diffuse and often stress-induced hair loss may not happen right away. In fact, it may take weeks or months after the stressful event for the hair to actually shed. Fortunately, after six to eight months this type of hair loss often improves.

Read: Don Cornelius Death Ruled A Suicide

One of the most prevalent views within the African-American community is that we do not intentionally kill ourselves. That suicide is something only white people or spiritually-weak people do. That suicide is a cop-out, and that to even consider it is a “punk move”. However, these apparent suicides and clinical research clearly indicate that African-Americans do commit suicide.

Celebrate great health! LIKE BlackDoctor.org on Facebook!

The Sad (And Real) Facts On Black Suicide

According to the American Association of Suicidology, in 2005, 1,992 suicides were completed by African-Americans and that suicide was the third leading cause of death among African-American youth. The Centers for Disease Control reported that between 1999 and 2004, young African-American males had the highest rate of suicide. This latter finding is consistent with research that males are more likely to complete suicides whereas females are more likely to attempt suicide.

One reason for the difference is that men tend to choose more lethal means of death than women. But please do not take this to mean that African-American women do not commit suicide; the same 2005 data from the American Association of Suicidology reports of the 1,992 completed suicides among African-Americans that 371 of those deaths were by females. It is also important to note that, generally, there tends to be a underreporting of this behavior, so the numbers may be higher than those cited.

If you’ve lost your mother to either a sudden or a long-term illness or accident, your Mother’s Day may be especially painful. Even if you lost your mother years ago, you may still struggle with depression, sadness, grief or despair.

There are no words…

Grief is grief is grief. It’s something that each person experiences differently and reacts to differently. But…there are some ways to seeking healthy relief from this sometimes overwhelming feeling:

1. Let yourself grieve. Denying or fighting your sadness makes it worse, and isn’t physically or emotionally healthy. Give yourself time to mourn. Go for a solitary walk or drive – invite your partner or loved one if you feel like it. Take some quiet time to reflect and honor your memories. Don’t feel guilty about crying, being angry, or not feeling like doing much of anything. The best thing you can do right now is to be honest with yourself and allow yourself to grieve.

2. Reach Out To Others. Talk to a family member, friend, or anyone else who you enjoy being around. If you don’t want to, there’s no reason to directly talk about your grief. Talk about anything that helps you breathe even a little sigh of relief. Similarly, if a friend or family member has recently lost their mother, reach out to them. It may feel awkward or uncomfortable to be around them, but just ask them how they are, or tell them you were thinking about them. Invite them out for a nice meal, a movie, a game of pool, or anything else you think the both of you may enjoy.

3. Show Your Love To Your Loved Ones. If you’ve lost your mom, shower your attention and appreciation on your mother-in-law, aunt, or even an older friend. To ease depression on Mother’s Day, show people you love them.

4. Express your emotions. Whether you like to write, paint, exercise, or garden, do something to get your emotions out of you. Yell, scream, take deep breaths, whisper, punch pillows, etc. Connect with God or the universe. Again, just be honest with yourself about how you’re feeling – and let yourself feel that way.
