Asthma - In 2002, an estimated 3.4 million African Americans currently had asthma. African Americans have the highest asthma prevalence of any racial/ethic group. The current asthma prevalence rate among Blacks was 38 percent higher than that for Whites. African Americans account for 26 percent of the 4,200 deaths attributed to asthma in 2001.
