340B experts joined BlackDoctor.org conversation with Black Women’s Health Imperative and Senator Sylvia Santana in Michigan to Fix 340B Accountability to ensure it helps people it’s intended for. This is a call for change and reform, not blame.
In alignment with our mission we are raising a sense of urgency to please carefully reconsider advancing Senate Bill 1179, as it could unintentionally make things harder for the Black community to access the care they deserve. The 340B program was designed many years ago to help people in need, but unfortunately, it has expanded beyond its original scope and has raised confusion due to its ambiguity and lack of accountability.
Research reveals 340B’s benefits often fail to reach Black individuals who need them most, and it’s becoming a financial burden for many individuals in our community. We want to reform, not blame, and we need to collectively address important accountability questions such as who is measuring where 340B is going? Who is ensuring full transparency?
Geographic disparities further exacerbate inequities in healthcare delivery. In Michigan, fewer than a third of contract pharmacies are located in medically underserved areas, perpetuating healthcare disparities that disproportionately impact Black and Brown communities. We respectfully request that consideration of SB 1179 be postponed until federal reforms have been finalized, paving the way for more effective and equitable healthcare solutions.
