I Heard Pilates is in! 7 Reasons Black Women Should Consider Trying it

Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a type of inflammatory arthritis that impacts the ligaments and joints that make up your spine. As time progresses, this inflammation can result in pain and stiffness. Symptoms can also develop throughout other areas of the body including the hips or shoulders.

Some people practice Pilates to help take care of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). This holistic exercise system created by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century has become popular across the globe for its many physical and mental health benefits. Even SZA has dropped a hint in her song "Special", with her lyric saying, "Heard Pilates is in," and she's not just talking trends. For Black women with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), Pilates isn’t just a fad—it’s a game-changer.

Learn just how Pilates can help soothe the aches and keep you moving smooth and steady. Whether you’re looking to keep up with the latest and greatest or seek true relief, let’s break down seven reasons why Pilates could be your next best move.

Benefits of Pilates for AS

A randomized controlled trial from 2023 divided 42 people with AS equally into a Pilates group and a control group. The Pilates group partook in Pilates three times weekly for eight weeks total. The control group performed a home fitness program for eight weeks.

The people doing the Pilates program displayed statistically significant improvements in the following:

  • disease activity
  • functionality
  • mobility of the spine
  • quality of life
  • core muscle endurance
  • stability

The control group only improved in flexor muscle endurance and limits of stability tests.

1. Get Physical Fitness the Right Way with Strength and Toning

Pilates is well known for ensuring a way to build and tone up your muscles, which is especially beneficial for Black women. This kind of activity can help you develop lean, sturdy muscles, manifesting a very fit and healthy physique, but also help relieve common problems like back pain and joint discomfort that Black American females may disproportionately encounter.

Pilates classes are intended to help strengthen the muscles that reinforce the spine. Pilates can help someone with AS improve or maintain their:

  • strength
  • flexibility
  • mobility
  • balance
  • coordination
  • posture

Those with AS tend to feel better when engaging in movements versus when staying still. Exercise is more useful in handling AS than any other type of arthritis.

2. Can Improve Your Flexibility

Black women can benefit considerably from Pilates’ emphasis on flexibility. Pilates can boost joint range of motion and minimize the likelihood of injuries, particularly when done along with other physical activities.

3. Promotes Proper Alignment and Posture

Pilates enhances proper alignment and posture. Due to the disproportionate weight of chronic back pain in Black communities, this is critical. Better posture can take care of back complications.

4. Gives Your Mental State a Clean Slate

The burdens of systemic racism and the pressures of society can be emotionally daunting. Pilates allows you to take your self-care to another level, ultimately prioritizing both your mental and physical health as a Black woman. Think of Pilates as your sanctuary of calm and focus, granting you the chance to de-stress and unwind. The mind-body connection nurtured in this mind-muscle movement can help mitigate anxiety and improve mental well-being.

Pilates inspires mindfulness with regulated and precise movements. It teaches the importance of being present in each moment, letting you disconnect from the pressures of everyday life and find bliss in the storm. The relaxation techniques in Pilates can have a major effect on decreasing stress and furthering mental clarity.

5. Feel New and Improved with Boosted Self-Confidence

Participating in Pilates constantly may result in that boost in self-confidence you need. Rather than conforming to societal expectations and beauty standards, find empowerment in your physical capabilities and looks. Pilates helps foster a solid sense of self-worth, evoking self-love and body positivity.

6. Inspires Body Positivity

Pilates encourages acceptance of all body types, no matter what shape or size. As Black women are usually prone to unfair beauty standards, Pilates promotes a healthier relationship with your body by practicing self-love and body positivity through strength, functionality, and wellness.

7. Cultivates Empowerment and Resilience

Pilates cultivates resilience mentally and physically speaking, which are essential characteristics for Black women tackling adversity. Through Pilates, you can muster the mental and physical strength to overcome obstacles and thrive with flying colors in every facet of life.

Pilates is a powerful tool that has its rewards. By incorporating Pilates into your routine, you can embody its life-changing values to adopt healthier, more self-assured, and fulfilling lives. As the Pilates trend continues to take off and spread like wildfire, it guarantees a welcoming space for Black women to celebrate their individuality and rediscover empowerment through moving and being mindful.
