The Best Hot Flash Hacks You Haven’t Tried…

natural hot flash remedies

There’s nothing quite like a bad hot flash. From sudden heat surges to sweating and chills, these symptoms can range from minor inconveniences to life-disrupting conditions. Driven by hormonal fluctuations that last from 30 seconds to 10 minutes, these menopausal episodes can be quite unpleasant.

And when they occur multiple times daily, the problems only get worse.

Fortunately, innovative, non-pharmacological remedies – like mocktail spritzers, portable lavender-scented fans, cooling yoga, and more – can make all the difference.

Mocktail Spritzers

Hydration is critical for managing hot flashes. The reason for this is that dehydration can worsen symptoms by impairing thermoregulation. Fortunately, mocktail spritzers—non-alcoholic, fizzy drinks with cooling ingredients—offer the refreshing remedy you need.

Ready to stay hydrated while nourishing the body and mind? Ingredients like cucumber, mint, and citrus are perfect.

For instance, consider the following recipe. Firstly, begin by blending one sliced cucumber, 10 mint leaves, the juice of one lime, and one cup of sparkling water. Strain it, pour it over ice, and garnish the drink with a mint sprig. For added flavor, you can even splash some pomegranate juice, which is rich in antioxidants for inflammation.

This spritzer works thanks in large part to the cucumber’s 95 percent water content, while mint activates cold-sensitive receptors in the mouth, creating a cooling sensation. And if you choose to add the pomegranate juice? Well, it turns out pomegranate’s phytoestrogens may mimic estrogen, a key part of managing menopausal symptoms.

Sip during work breaks, at social gatherings, or for breakfast and dinner. If you’d like, you can always freeze your mocktail spritzers into ice cubes for a portable, cooling treat to suck on during a hot flash.

Portable Lavender-Scented Fans

Cooling beverages are only one part of the solution to hot flashes. It’s also important to nourish the skin externally. This means cooling the skin’s surface during a hot flash, which, according to research, can reduce the intensity by up to 40 percent or more.

Aromatherapy takes this to the next level. Lavender enhances relaxation, calming the mind while the body is relieved through the airflow.

Look for a solid portable, battery-operated fan (like those from Amazon Basics) or a foldable hand fan for discreet use. Brands like Chillout offer mini fans that can also mist for extra cooling. To infuse the lavender, attach a small cotton pad soaked with 2-3 drops of lavender essential oil to the fan’s guard. You can likewise use a lavender-scented cooling towel, like those from Frogg Toggs, which stays cool when wet.

Take your portable fan with you, whether you’re commuting, dining out, traveling for work or vacation, or simply concerned about flare-ups. Use as soon as you feel a hot flash set in for maximum relief.

Thanks to lavender’s linalool compound, your brain’s calming neural pathways are activated while airflow cools your skin temperature, signaling to your brain to stabilize body heat.

Cooling Yoga

Believe it or not, exercise can actually help regulate hot flashes by improving hormonal balance and reducing stress. Of course, you want to keep it cool.

This is where cooling yoga poses come into play. These exercises emphasize gentle movements and deep breathing, and have been shown to reduce hot flash frequency by 30 percent in perimenopausal women.

For the best poses, consider the child’s pose, legs-up-the-wall, and sitali breath.

The first, child’s pose, is quite simple. It promotes relaxation and lowers stress hormones, while the legs-up-the-wall position elevates your legs for improved circulation. Finally, sitali breath helps cool your body temperature. Essentially, you inhale through a curled tongue or pursed lips before exhaling through the nose.

If you want to explore these techniques in greater depth, many local yoga classes can help. You can also follow online videos (like yoga with Adriene’s menopause-specific flows).

Just make sure that you practice 15-20 minutes daily, ideally in a cool room with a fan. Place a chilled, damp towel on your neck during yoga to enhance cooling, a great way to amplify your skin’s natural healing.

Frozen Fruit Cubes

Never neglect your diet. Diet plays a pivotal role in managing hot flashes, and foods high in water content and phytoestrogens can mitigate most symptoms. Frozen fruit cubes are a delicious, portable way to cool down while delivering nutrients that support hormonal balance.

Ready for the recipe? Simply blend watermelon, berries, or mango with a splash of soy milk (rich in phytoestrogens) and freeze in ice cube trays. You can additionally put in chia seeds for their omega-3s, which reduce inflammation over time.

The citrulline in watermelon may also improve blood flow, easing hot flash intensity, while soy’s isoflavones mimic estrogen, potentially reducing the condition’s frequency.

Use as needed and make sure to carry in a cooler when traveling for work or vacation.

Looking for some other ideas to hack your hot flashes? Chilled wrist wraps, moisture-wicking bedsheets, and phytoestrogen-rich snacks like edamame should all be considered. You can even use a smart water bottle, like one from HidrateSpark, which ensures you get your daily eight to 10 cups of water for optimal hydration.

When integrating these hacks into your daily life, make sure you keep several things in mind. For scented fans, keep them at your work desk or bring them in your car when you have to go somewhere. Mocktail spritzers are perfect for lunch breaks, as are fruit cubes.

If a hot flash strikes when you’re at a social gathering, consider cooling yoga. See if you can’t find a private space away from the crowd where you can collect yourself, issue some calming breaths, and tune out the noise.

When you’re on the go, pack your frozen fruit cubes in a cooler bag and ensure your clothing is complementary. Breathable, layered clothing is always preferred – everything from cotton tunics to linen, hemp, and Tencel styles.

And finally, at night, don’t forget to practice Legs-Up-the-Wall to improve blood flow and ward off those pesky nighttime flashes. Cooling bedding made from fabrics like bamboo and cotton will also help increase airflow while drawing sweat away from your body. They also feel cool to the touch, making them ideal for ‘hot’ sleepers.

By incorporating the hacks in this article, you’ll be well on your way to managing those heated moments confidently and consistently.
