CBD is the latest craze in many respects but unlike many so-called “miracle cures” there is actually scientific evidence backing up some of the health benefits associated with CBD.
However, it is important to consider that many of these perceived benefits do require more research and study. CBD has reached unbelievable levels of popularity in the last few years with people from all walks of life using it for a variety of reasons.
Some people take CBD to help them relax while others take it for its perceived medical/ health benefits. The wide range of CBD products is legal and available in large parts of the world. But there are a lot of commonly believed myths and misconceptions about it.
In this piece, we’ll be examining all the biggest myths surrounding CBD. By knowing what is true and what is just myth you’ll be much more educated about CBD and know the risks of using it. So, if you are thinking of giving CBD a try or simply want to know more about it read on!
CBD Has No Side Effects
Many of the commonly believed side effects of CBD usually frame it in quite a negative light. However, there are also some more positive myths many people believe as well the main one being that CBD has no side effects. This is one that many suppliers of CBD are only too happy to repeat but it isn’t exactly true.
Now we do know that CBD doesn’t seem to have many serious side effects however this isn’t the same as having no side effects at all. More research is really needed before we can know the full risks of potential side effects, but we do know a few.
For one thing, CBD is believed to cause drowsiness, a dry mouth, and low blood pressure in some people. Although perhaps the biggest issue is that it could potentially interact with many pharmaceutical drugs through its mechanism of inhibiting certain enzymes that play an important role in the metabolization of these pharmaceutical drugs. Pregnant women and Mothers’ who want to breastfeed are also not recommended to use CBD products because CBD’s effects on an infant's brain are currently unknown.
CBD Makes You High
Perhaps the most commonly believed myth about CBD is that it is basically the same as marijuana. This as I’ am sure you can already tell is not true and CBD will not give you a high. The main psychoactive ingredient in the cannabis plant is THC.
THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol is the main psychoactive compound which is what gives people a high when they take cannabis. CBD contains only very low levels of THC because it is most commonly derived from the hemp plant. Hemp plants contain only very low amounts of THC.
This means there is no risk of a high from taking CBD products. The only risk to be aware of is that you need to ensure you are buying safe, high-quality CBD products. As some poor quality products may have higher levels of THC. So, as long as you buy from a safe supplier/ manufacturer you are at no risk of getting high off CBD.
CBD Doesn’t Work
This is a somewhat difficult myth to challenge because...
...in some cases it might be true. So, let’s look at both sides and get a more complete and factual look at CBD, shall we? Many people claim that CBD is just a product of man-made hype that’s made up to sell CBD products.
But CBD isn’t a modern-day snake oil it does have actual scientific research supporting some of its claimed benefits. It’s just that there isn’t a much, if any, clinical evidence supporting the notion that it could cure diseases. Many of the more unbelievable claims about CBD like it being a cancer-cure are simply untrue.
There is some evidence supporting the notion that CBD has beneficial effects like anti-inflammatory effects. However, that doesn’t mean CBD will always work for your pain problem for example.
Really the right view to take is a neutral one. CBD does have scientific backing for some of its reported benefits. But more research is really needed before we can say for sure and remember CBD can have different effects on everyone.
The amount, quality, and form of CBD you take will all impact its effects. To say CBD doesn’t work is a bit too simplistic because many things need to be taken into consideration. So, my best advice is to be realistic with your expectations when taking CBD.
CBD is Illegal
Considering how wildly available it is nowadays you would think this myth would be quite easy to disprove. However, despite this many people do still incorrectly think CBD is actually illegal, but rest assured in the vast majority of cases it isn’t.
So, let’s get right down to it and look at the legality of CBD products, shall we? CBD products are legal in most countries although with certain restrictions. For example, in the US CBD products are legal on a federal level although they need to have incredibly low levels of THC less than 0.3% to be exact. In the UK CBD products are legal if they contain a maximum of 0.2% of THC. Again, the best way to be safe is to buy your CBD from a safe supplier/ manufacturer.
CBD Will Work Quickly
One of the most commonly reported perks of CBD is that it provides instant results and is very fast-acting. This is again something that has been widely reported and you will likely see it on the back of CBD capsule packets but it’s a myth.
Now the good news is some people have reported feeling the effects of CBD quite quickly. But it really seems to be down to the individual, what they’re using CBD for and the type of CBD they’re taking. With so many variables it’s easy to see why there are so many different reports about the speed of effects of CBD.
But in most cases, you shouldn’t be expecting instant results or effects this doesn’t mean the CBD isn’t working or not doing anything beneficial it just means you need to be more patient. Give yourself at least a few weeks and then see how you feel. One study done on epilepsy patients, for example, found that CBD becomes more effective the longer it’s taken.
So, that is a look at some of the most commonly believed myths about CBD. Hopefully, as more research is carried out into CBD, we’ll have a better idea of exactly how it works.
