A bad respiratory infection got the best of bad gal Rihanna just before her performance at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards on Monday night.

Per doctor’s orders, the 27-year-old star canceled what was supposed to be a super creative performance of her song, “Kiss It Better,” a lovey-dovey song off her certified platinum eighth studio album, Anti.

The Bajan beauty took to social media to apologize for leaving the Staples Center before the show kicked off. She wrote on Twitter:

#NAVY so sorry I couldn't be there ….. Thanks Grammys and CBS for your support tonight.

According to Billboard.com, Rihanna’s doctor placed her on a 48-hour vocal rest because she “was at risk of hemorrhaging her vocal cords,” her rep said. Despite taking antibiotics for three days, Billboard.com reported, the medication hadn’t killed the infection by Monday night.

Bronchitis is the inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, according to Mayo Clinic. The bronchial tubes carry air to and from the lungs. Symptoms include coughing up mucus.

It’s unclear whether Rihanna has acute or chronic bronchitis. Acute bronchitis can improve within days with medication; however, there can be repeated bouts. As for chronic bronchitis, which is more serious, the inflammation is constant and can be caused by smoking.

During The Late Late Show, host James Corden explained what he knew about RiRi’s performance, which was supposed to include a ‘80s-style talk show with them that was going to be “really cool.”
