First Lady Celebrates Black History Month With African Dance! [VIDEO]

dance at the white house

In celebration of Black History Month, First Lady Michelle Obama hosted a special event in honor of the contributions women of color have made to dance.

The First Lady hosted several living dance legends, including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s Judith Jamison, Debbie Allen, the Dance Theater of Harlem’s Virginia Johnson, and Hip-Hop choreographer Fatima Robinson.

“Today is a very special day at The White House. It’s very special for me personally because I absolutely love dance. I think it’s probably my favorite art form,” said Mrs. Obama.

According to the official press release, this event goes along with the White House’s Black History Month theme of “Honoring the Past While Celebrating the Present; 7 Years of Living African American History.”

The audience for the Q&A session included 51 dance students from the Washington, DC area who were presented with the exclusive opportunity to listen to the iconic dancers, hear from the First Lady’s point of view and be apart of dance workshops where they learned from the experts themselves.

“This makes my heart smile!” another person said in reaction to the pictures shared by the White House.
