Fitting In With Dentures: Socializing & Living Life To The Fullest

Older African American couple outside in parkIf you’ve lived with tooth loss or decay, you understand how life-changing a new set of dentures can be. They can restore confidence in your smile. Yet, you may still feel a little self-conscious wearing them.

You may notice them shifting, or hear a clicking sound when you speak. You may even worry about eating out with friends. There’s no need to clear your social calendar! Here are a few ways, courtesy of MyDentureCare.com, to make sure you feel your absolute best.

Eat soft foods.

You can still enjoy your favorite foods and time spent with loved ones over a good meal. If your dentures tend to click while you’re eating, it may be the kinds of foods you’re chewing on. Try chewing your food much slower or taking smaller bites of softer foods – including eggs and yogurt. Avoid sticky foods, like gum, and use both sides of your mouth to chew for balance. View a guide to eating with dentures here.

Talk slowly.

Dentures, especially a new set, may require an adjustment period as you get accustomed to wearing them. You may find some difficulty in speaking as fast as you did without the dentures, or even speaking certain words or phrases. When learning to function with your new dentures, try speaking slowly at first. In this practice, take notice to which words tend to cause your dentures to click or move around.
