Foot Fungus: Old Problem, New Solution

foot fungus

Chances are you haven’t heard of the word, onychomycosis, but you may have seen it or even smelled it on someone’s feet.

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the toenails or fingernails that may involve any component of the nail unit, including the matrix, bed, or plate.

Toenail fungus can begin as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your toenail. You may think it’s harmless at first, but as the infection goes deeper, toenail fungus can cause your toenail to become thick, brittle and discolored. The infection is contagious and can spread from toenail to toenail and person to person. It can sometimes cause pain and often a foul odor.

Onychomycosis continues to be a common problem in adults, often responding poorly to topical treatment due to limited drug penetration of the nail plate. Improving penetration has been attempted previously by chemical and physical means with some success.

But there’s a new, easier way to put an end to it. Micronail penetration or MNP is a painless procedure that does not use dangerous oral medications to treat toenail fungus or onychomycosis.

MNP procedure uses small holes approximately 0.4 mm in diameter in the toenail which allows for topical medication to penetrate the toenail and treat the fungal infection.

This method allows for a quicker visual improvement in the appearance of the toenail. Improvement is usually noticed within the first 3-12 weeks.
