Causes
Genetics
Curse you genes! According to experts, persons who suffer from acne often report that their parents, too, faced similar skin issues.
Poor Diet
You are what you eat. In fact, in a 2013 report published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Diabetics, researchers argued that there is indeed a connection between food and acne. The main culprits include sugary foods, dairy and unhealthy fats. Meanwhile, it was found that foods containing healthy fats, like the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish may help reduce severe acne.
Beauty Products
Trapping dirt and oil in pores, makeup, styling products or oils transferred from your hands – which have not been properly rinsed off – can increase your risk of breakouts.
The Solution
Create an attack plan
Because acne is such a diverse skin issue, you’ll need to consult a dermatologist to determine what skincare regimen is best for you. Common treatments include over-the-counter creams, blue light therapy, pills, lasers or a combination of several treatments.
Eat healthy
Sweet tooth? According to experts, sufferers can get an edge up on acne by shying away from foods like pasta, bread, and sweets; which create a spike in blood sugar, leading to inflammation.
In a study conducted by The International Society of Dermatology, researchers investigated the link between diet, acne and mental distress in “acne-prone male subjects” by asking them to consume 25 g of 99% dark chocolate daily for 4 weeks. They discovered, “dark chocolate when consumed in normal amounts for 4 weeks can exacerbate acne in male subjects with acne-prone skin,” the study reads.
Reduce stress
Stop sweating the small stuff. Research shows that while stress alone cannot trigger acne, it can absolutely make an existing problem worse. This occurs due to the increased production of a stress hormone called cortisol, which can increase inflammation in the body and stimulate oil glands, giving you a greasy face. Combat stress with regular exercise, adequate sleep or meditation.
