Doing This Wrong Can Be As Bad As Not Doing It At All

man flossing teethFlossing is an oral hygiene technique that is recommended by dentists to remove food and debris from in between the teeth that can lead to plaque buildup and tooth decay.  As important as flossing is for the teeth, many people skip over this step within an oral hygiene routine daily, leaving their mouths vulnerable to damage that could become irreversible. Flossing incorrectly can lead to bruising of the gums or a redeposit of plaque back onto the teeth, so in order to keep the teeth healthy and plaque free here are a few tips on how to floss properly.

Types of Floss

Before getting into technique, it is important to know the different types of floss available on the market. Nylon and PTFE are the two types of floss available for consumers to use and they both have different qualities.  Nylon floss is multifilament floss created from multiple fibers of nylon.  It comes in a waxed and non-waxed formula in a variety of flavors; however it can shed between teeth because of its multifilament structure.  PTFE floss on the other hand is monofilament floss that is more expensive in price, but is shed resistant and glides smoothly between teeth. Both of these flosses are effective in removing plaque and food debris.

Proper Flossing Technique

In order to floss properly, use 18 inches of floss, winding most of its length around each middle finger leaving an inch or two to work with.  Holding the floss taught between the thumbs and index fingers use an up and down motion to gently glide the floss between the teeth curving around the base of each tooth under the gum line.  Never snap or force the floss between the teeth as it may bruise the delicate tissue of the gums and cause bleeding to occur.  Make sure to use a clean section of floss every time to avoid returning plaque onto the teeth.
