3. Ease up on the heavy oils and butters.
Most naturals swear that life is incomplete if they can’t add their oils/butters to their hair but honestly they really aren’t all that necessary. The role of oil is to act as a sealant. But actually, your conditioner has already fulfilled that responsibility once you added it to your hair, especially a well-formulated conditioner that has oil listed in the ingredients. As for butters, their role is to act as the cream in the LOC method. If the butter you’re using has no hold to offer your hairstyle then what is the point other than to add another layer of product to your hair? Thus adding more work for your shampoo to do on wash day.
4. Use salon quality products.
It is a known fact that you get exactly what you pay for and this is totally true when it comes to hair care products. Your hair is like a fine fabric and should be treated as such. When you use quality concentrated products you in turn use less product on your hair and are less likely to create build up.
5. Stop approaching your natural hair with a relaxed mindset.
Your natural hair isn’t going to shine like your relaxed hair used to. It’s not going to be frizz free like it used to and it’s definitely not going to feel the way it used to. Please cue “Let It Go” from Frozen and begin the process of accepting every piece of fiber that emerges from your scalp for what it is. It’s unpredictable, rebellious and imperfectly beautiful!
