this decision was made based on her doctor’s advice so she could “save what was left of her voice.” It was at that point that she disclosed that she’d been diagnosed with reflux laryngitis and it was inadvisable for her to keep singing.
Reflux laryngitis is fairly common and you may also know it as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux. During this illness, stomach acid gets into the throat and causes irritation. If the irritation is significant, the larynx swells and it can become painful to talk. Other symptoms of reflux laryngitis include hoarseness, feeling a lump in the throat, and having a non-productive cough.
Treating the illness usually entails using medications to control the reflux and reducing lifestyle habits that exacerbate the condition. For example, smoking, drinking alcohol, having caffeine, and eating certain foods can make the symptoms worse. It’s also common to prescribe rest so the larynx gets a chance to heal.
The Future She Has In Mind
Though TEMS has cleared her schedule up to the middle of July, it’s obvious that she has no plans to step away from her music career. In her announcement on Instagram, TEMS promised that she would be back to performing and recording as soon as she has been advised by her doctor.
At the moment, she still plans to release music that is representative of her life and true to her experiences. In a recent interview with ‘NME’, she notes that she will continue to grow and develop, which will likely be shown in her music over time. TEMS plans to be in the music industry for a long time.
Some people may not have known anything about TEMS – especially if they’re not in the music industry, but her historic win at the BET Awards has put her in the limelight. Though she’s taken a small break from singing to heal from reflux laryngitis, she’ll definitely be back to making the music she loves soon.
