So how do you reduce stress during one of the happiest times of your life?
- Avoid smoking, alcohol and drug use of any kind. These behaviors increase your risk of miscarriage, as well as put your baby at risk of being born early at a low birth weight
- Researchers have found that mothers who sought out counseling for chronic stress were less likely to deliver early.
- Exercise not only relieves stress, but activities like yoga have been shown to improve pregnancy symptoms and reduce the risk of preterm birth. Did we mention the trendy activity is generally safe to do while pregnant? However, it’s always wise to consult your doctor. Other low-impact activities usually recommended include brisk walking, swimming, stationary cycling and using an elliptical or stair-climber.
- Massage, aromatherapy, acupuncture and hypnotherapy have been shown to help to reduce stress.
Lesson? Although stress can be more challenging to manage during pregnancy, it’s important to try to relax. Another tip? Create a strong support system and surround yourself with loved ones. In my opinion, there’s no better stress reliever like some loving from close friends and family.
