Golf great Tiger Woods is hospitalized and is undergoing surgery following a bad single-car accident in L.A. County on Tuesday morning — with officials reporting that he may have had required the jaws of life to free him from the vehicle.
“On February 23, 2021, at approximately 7:12 AM, LASD responded to a single-vehicle roll-over traffic collision on the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes,” officials say.
“The vehicle was traveling northbound on Hawthorne Boulevard, at Blackhorse Road, when it crashed. The vehicle sustained major damage,” officials said. “The driver and sole occupant was identified as PGA golfer, Eldrick ‘Tiger’ Woods.” officials confirmed.
“Mr. Woods was extricated from the wreck with the ‘jaws of life’ by Los Angeles County firefighters and paramedics, then transported to a local hospital by ambulance for his injuries.”
Tiger was just on the road to redemption after his 2019 Masters win. That win was his first after his last high-profile car accident and cheating scandal with numerous women. Many professionals and fans alike counted him out, but he rebounded with a huge win.
A local news station showed footage of Woods’ wrecked vehicle, still bearing the logo of the Genesis Invitational, the tournament hosted by his foundation last weekend:
Just this week, he took photos with stars like David Spade and Dwyane Wade — and announced his recent back surgery could keep him out of the upcoming Masters’ tournament in Augusta, Georgia.
He had a fifth surgery on his back, a microdiscectomy, two days before Christmas and gave no indication when he would return to golfing, according to the Associated Press.
Microdiscectomy, also sometimes called microdecompression or microdiscectomy, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed on patients with a herniated lumbar disc. During this surgery, a surgeon will remove portions of the herniated disc to relieve pressure on the spinal nerve column.
Ever since the incident was reported by TMZ, multiple celebrities and fans have begun to express their concern. The incident prompted an outpouring of support from Woods’ supporters throughout sports and business. Nike, a longtime Woods sponsor, said it was aware of his involvement in the crash.
Nike and other prominent sponsors expressed concern for golf legend.
“We are following the news around Tiger and our thoughts and heart are with him and his family at this time,” Nike said in a statement.
