What Is Turmeric Good For?

what is turmeric good for

Recent studies suggest turmeric might be one of the best spices to add to your diet. However, many people still aren’t aware of its potential health benefits. If you’re looking for an easy way to manage or prevent certain conditions, here’s why you should reach for some turmeric.

What Is Turmeric?

Though turmeric is categorized as a spice, it’s mainly used for its bright yellow-orange color. The root is typically used in mustards, curry powder, kinds of butter, and cheeses. Though it’s a part of Indian, Southeast Asian, and Middle Eastern cooking, it has also been a part of non-traditional medicine for some time.

What Does Turmeric Do?

Historically, turmeric has been used to treat respiratory issues as well as chronic pain. Now that studies have been done, these benefits might be due to its active compounds known as curcuminoids. The most effective one is curcumin, which has strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. As a result, eating or using turmeric usually helps with pain and other conditions that are caused by inflammation.

Is Turmeric Good For You?

For the most part, health experts agree that turmeric will likely have a positive impact on your health. However, there are some people who might need to be cautious. If you have a clotting disorder, consuming turmeric may make it worse. Consuming turmeric may interfere with the absorption of iron as well. It has also been shown that the spice can interact with diabetes medications, chemotherapy drugs, and antibiotics. It’s best to consult your doctor before adding turmeric to your diet.
