Summer is here. Some days are hotter than others. Many people are out enjoying the weather and outdoor activities. Everyone appears to be in a good mood. However, some people are experiencing increased anxiety due to the change in season and increased crowds.
Research finds that the summer’s hot temperatures can exacerbate anxiety symptoms like sweating, tiredness, dehydration, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and nausea.
Here are eight things you can do to better cope summer anxiety this summer season.
1. Water! Water! Water! Drink plenty of water. Dehydration is known to trigger anxiety.
2. Keep yourself cool at night when you sleep.
3. Dress so your body temperature can be cool. Wear loose cotton clothing and light colors (light colors tend to reflect heat as opposed to absorbing it).
4. Prepare meals that don’t expose you to a lot of kitchen heat. Try salads, grilling outdoors, or dining out.
5. Take cool showers!
6. Try to avoid going out in the heat of the day when the sun is at its hottest.
7. Talk to close friends or loved ones. Distractions help minimize the intensity of anxiety.
8. Talk to yourself kindly and be patient. Implement positive thinking and self-talk daily. Don’t compare yourself to others. Be the best version of you.
