When singer and activist Yewande Austin was preparing for a private performance, a heart arrhythmia changed those plans. She initially denied to herself both what was happening and the severity of her heart disease.

“My mother’s gonna be so pissed. She’s gonna be so mad at me that I worked so hard all of my life and I have given so much to so many people, and how dare I leave without saying goodbye?” Austin recalls of that life-changing moment in a new video for the American Heart Association.
Today as a heart survivor, she cautions others to take the time to get checkups and make healthy choices.
