Embarking on a weight loss journey is a deeply personal and transformative experience.
The Struggle and Initial Efforts
For Dr. Zipporah Abla, the journey began with a weight of around 200 lbs. Despite rigorous efforts, including joining Orange Theory and adhering to measured diets, she found it challenging to achieve the results she desired.
“Weight loss was the only thing on my mind, and it felt like an endless journey of trial and error,” Dr. Abla shares. “I was constantly frustrated, trying different things, and thinking about the impact on my body all day long.”
“I explored juicing, eliminated wheat and dairy, tried sugar-free and low-carb diets, and even fasting, but the results were not what I wanted,” the author adds.
Frustrated with conventional methods, Dr. Abla, an equal rights advocate and mother of two, eventually sought a more effective and personalized approach.

The Turning Point
Fortunately, her journey took a positive turn when she discovered LifeMD, a program she believed would finally bring about the changes she desired.
Her previous attempts with various weight loss strategies had left her disheartened, but the unique approach of LifeMD captured her attention. Currently, LifeMD has about 300 new patients signing up each day for access to its virtual integrated weight loss clinic.
LifeMD: A Unique Approach with Shanta Williams
Central to Dr. Abla’s positive experience was her healthcare provider, Shanta Williams, APRN, a board-certified, multi-state Nurse Practitioner who has worked in healthcare for over 14 years.
The presence of a Black provider who shared her unique challenges fostered a sense of trust and connection.
“Having a Black provider who openly shared her own journey with the medicine made me believe it was possible. Trust is essential, and Shanta has earned it,” Dr. Abla shares. “Connecting with Shanta instilled a sense of trust because she looks like me and understands the unique challenges within the healthcare system and community.”
Williams’ personalized approach was instrumental in tailoring the program to suit Dr. Abla’s needs, addressing both the physical and mental aspects of her well-being.
“Representation matters. It’s important for patients to see someone who looks like them, who has been through a similar journey, and can provide personalized support,” Williams notes.
Customized Support from Williams
Williams played a pivotal role in Dr. Abla’s journey, providing personalized support that went beyond traditional weight loss programs. From regulating the pace of weight loss to addressing specific lifestyle challenges, Williams’ guidance proved invaluable in navigating the complexities of Dr. Abla’s journey.
“Being a Black provider allows me to relate to my patients on a deeper level. I understand the cultural nuances and challenges they face in their weight loss journey,” Williams adds.
The Role of GLP-1s
A significant aspect of Dr. Abla’s weight loss journey was the incorporation of GLP-1s. These medications, under Williams’ guidance, played a crucial role in accelerating Dr. Abla’s progress. Dr. Abla highlights the positive experience of accessing GLP-1s online without significant issues, emphasizing the medication’s impact on her weight loss goals.
“GLP-1s have been a game-changer for me. I’m losing weight without constantly thinking about it, and the mental chatter around food has disappeared,” Dr. Abla shares. “These medications are not just a tool for weight loss; they’ve allowed me to enjoy food again and have a positive relationship with it.”
According to Williams, GLP-1s work by regulating appetite and promoting a feeling of fullness, contributing to successful and sustainable weight loss
“These medications are tailored to individual needs, helping patients achieve their weight loss goals without drastic changes that might lead to rebound effects,” she shares. “GLP-1s, when used appropriately, can be a safe and effective option. It’s essential to understand how they work and customize their use to each patient’s unique journey.”
Overcoming Stigma
Unfortunately, there is a stigma around weight loss, one that Dr. Abla has experienced firsthand.
“I’ve experienced the stigma around weight loss, but I don’t subscribe to it. There’s a misconception that being overweight is a sign of a lack of control or laziness. The stigma can be harsh, but my focus is on embracing health tools without judgment,” Dr. Abla adds. “GLP-1s are just another tool, and I’m all about embracing health tools without judgment.”
Cultural stigmas around weight loss, which are highly prevalent in the Black community, can create barriers, Williams notes. “It’s essential to break these barriers and recognize that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness.”
A recent NIH study shows GLP-1s may impact Black patients differently than Caucasian patients due to differences in fasting and stimulated insulin levels. This makes access to experts with close knowledge of these nuanced interactions vital to ensure proper care and safety.
Embracing Well-being
Beyond the numbers on the scale, Dr. Abla’s journey with LifeMD and GLP-1s has resulted in transformative changes. The mental chatter around food has diminished, and her relationship with food has become positive. She’s now able to enjoy food without the stress that has haunted her for years.
“I’m not just focused on the number on the scale; I’m committed to my overall well-being. Each day feels like a step closer to the best version of myself,” Dr. Abla shares. “My journey isn’t just about losing weight; it’s about feeling great, being less bloated, and ensuring my body doesn’t hurt. It’s a holistic approach to well-being.”
