In our digital world, online dating has become a natural part of the dating process. We all know someone who met their significant other online. According to Pew Research, most Americans view online dating as a good way to meet people. The stigma is gone. Yet, many singles desiring long-term, committed relationships hesitate to really invest in their online dating experience.
As a matchmaker and dating coach, I often work with clients who have completely written off meeting other singles online. Usually, they’ve tried online dating before and were disappointed with the results. I’ve found 4 ways to have a more pleasurable online dating experience. If you’ve tried meeting singles online and have less than desirable results, stick with me.
1. Pictures are important
Great photos are the most important ingredient of a quality profile. Your photos should be clear, flattering, and honest.
Avoid too many group photos on your personal profile. You want all of the attention on you. Use this as an opportunity to get professional photos. Better photos lead to better matches. Use recent photos.
Be honest. If you post an old photo of you 30 lbs lighter, your match will immediately notice when you meet in person. It’s not fair to either of you.

2. Make your bio stand out
A good bio is inviting, has personality, and is clear about your intentions. Avoid a long list of what you’re not looking for. Instead of saying “I don’t date people who eat meat,” say “I’m looking forward to meeting a fellow vegetarian.”
When most use their bio to list their age, height, and career, a bio with personality will stand out. For example, a Cavaliers fan might say “Drinks on me if you’re a Cavs fan” in their profile.
If you know writing isn’t one of your strengths, have a friend proofread for grammatical errors. Lastly, be clear about your intentions. If you’re looking for a long-term relationship, say it. You want to attract those who desire the same.
3. Avoid cliches
Traveling is the new “walks on the beach.” Everyone’s profile says they love to travel. Who doesn’t like to travel?
Instead of saying what is assumed, talk about your favorite place to travel or a unique experience while traveling. If you want to stand out from the other 50 people he or she swiped before you, avoid saying what everyone else says.

4. Be consistent
Find at least 15 minutes to swipe each day. Set a reminder on your phone if necessary. When you match with someone, get the conversation going right away. If you wait several days to reply to a message, the thousands of other potential single options could have distracted your match.
Log in every day to meet new matches and respond to conversations you’ve already started.
Meeting other singles online doesn’t have to be time-consuming or disappointing. With a little patience and consistency, you can meet someone special. Your pictures should capture their eye. Your profile should capture their mind. Be the best version of yourself and you’ll match with someone who is looking for a person like you. That’s the ultimate goal.
