Goldman told BDO that “Kognito is a health simulation company, concentrating on harnessing the power of the conversation with virtual humans to improve health. Our work targets both the health care providers as well as patients and their caregivers”.
In essence, the software developed by Kognito has the ability to improve doctor-patient interactions and outcomes through situational training geared to dealing with specific conditions and those commonly affected.
What Goldman and the team at Kognito have been able to do is integrate the power of gaming technology with research in neuroscience and social cognition into a platform that transforms the current behavior modification model. To date, according to Kognito, “Over 1+ million Health Care Providers, patients, educators, and students across 500 organizations have used Kognito simulations to improve social, emotional, and physical health.”
There are two main applications of Kognito and their virtual human technology thus far have been to improve doctor-patient relations, as well as patient education practices.
The first application is designed to help train doctors and other providers in effective patient communication through real conversations with virtual humans that serve as unique patients with specific conditions, background experiences and personalities that mimic patients seen in real life.
Practitioners have been able to use this application to learn how to best manage conversations with patients, while directing the flow of interaction through both positive and negative communication methods, allowing for real-time teachable moments and behavior modification for users.
The second approach involves using virtual humans as an online coach for patients to help them better understand their diagnosis, the treatments associated and real-life experiences from a survivor of the same condition they are suffering from.
This application has been recently adopted by the CDC to ensure that patients have the proper tools, information, and resources necessary to make informed decisions regarding their health and condition.
Using virtual humans to engage in patient education expands on traditional education sources such as brochures, flyers or internet searches, and allows patients to control a real conversation asking the questions that concern them, to those who have been through the process.
“Project sponsors from the CDC and NACDD connected our team with subject matter experts in the field of oncology and Triple Negative Breast Cancer survivors to build a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by both providers and patients at the time of diagnosis and throughout their battle to achieve remission. Patients are often overwhelmed at the time of diagnosis and struggle to comprehend and retain the information provided by their oncologists at the point of care. Even in the days and weeks after receiving the diagnosis it remains difficult to discuss with even close family members. Our innovative solution, in the form of an emotionally-responsive virtual coach, provides patients with a critical outlet to express their true feelings and get clear and accurate information to increase their motivation to pursue treatment.” Kognito.
Kognito is revolutionizing and elevating doctor-patient engagement, as well as patient education resources through their virtual human technology. Whether practitioners are training on how to navigate patient interactions without implementing their own ingrained cultural bias, or patients have difficult questions about treatment options and outcomes, the virtual human interface offered by Kognito is sure to change the way health services are delivered in the future.
