Monica has come a long way since arguing with Brandy about whose boyfriend that guy really was (I personally think he was playing both of them).
These days, Monica has a more mature perspective on life. In an interview with Essence, we learn about her thoughts on what true beauty is, revealing of her sensibility.
“My beauty philosophy has nothing to do with the outside. You meet some of the most beautiful people and their inside is tarnished. To me it changes everything,” the songstress said, adding, “I’m always trying to do self-work to be better on the inside and I think it shows on the outside when you’re happy and you’re treating others the way you want to be treated. It exudes something different on the outside.”
With that being said, Monica knows an integral part of feeling beautiful is looking beautiful – up to YOUR standards – and being true to yourself. Earlier this year, the Grammy winner and mother of three, known for her love of hair color and dramatic styles, switched up her look and revealed a bold, blazing red cropped ‘do inspired by her highly-anticipated eighth studio album, Code Red.
“The cut symbolizes me getting back to the fearlessness and courageous part of myself that I shared with the world in the ’90s when I released my first album ‘Miss Thang,’” Monica told PEOPLE. “It’s easy to over-think things and not trust your natural instincts. I let go and let the music be created in my truth.”
Much like her confidence in creating music, Monica has been confident about her hair, even in circumstances when many others would not.
“Let’s just say she didn’t know what she was doing. I just looked in the mirror and I told her to cut it all off. I didn’t think to get permission or ask my mom. All I can think about when I think about that short hairstyle is getting home and seeing the look on my mother’s face. She looked like she wanted to pack me up and send me somewhere for a while. That was how the short hair came about for me.” But she sported the short hair in front of the camera and in front of crowds. Looks like that confidence never left her.
