Even with hips, butt, and curves, to your doctor, you can still be considered overweight and at risk for disorders, diseases, and cancers. In Jaz Jackson’s case, her illness came in the form of depression. Diagnosed in 2012, this 29-year-old Chicago native decided in 2016 to take matters into her own hands and help fight the disorder.
Losing over 50 lbs. in just under a year, Jaz incorporated her doctor’s simple orders to journal, eat healthily, and exercise into her life. The results brought her natural mental health without the aid of prescribed drugs and a new mindset on life that came equipped with a new bangin’ body. Read her story:
BDO: When was that pinnacle turning point for you to decide to take your health serious?
JJ: In 2016, I’d reached the height of my depression. Having been diagnosed in 2012, I’d lived with the disease in silence for over 4 years. I started to notice that I couldn’t handle day to day tasks such as working or being active with my son. Additionally, my weight had skyrocketed to 190lbs. I knew it was because of my depression and using food as a coping mechanism. So, coming to terms with my current state made me want to make the change.
BDO: What were some of the first steps you took toward your new lifestyle?
JJ: My lifestyle change came about because I wanted to work on my mental health challenges. I was informed by my doctor that other ways outside of medication to combat the disease was through working out and eating properly. Taking the advice of my doctor and running with it was the beginning of my new life.
BDO: Were there any moments that you felt set you back? If so, how did you overcome them?
JJ: When dealing with depression your mind can be your setback. I experienced this during my journey. Fighting against your thoughts is an uphill battle when you’re so used to thinking a certain way. I had days where I would tell myself “you can’t do this” but in those moments, I would stop and write my thoughts down in a journal to get them out and not allow them to snowball into something greater.
BDO: What is your take on body envy? Is it still prevalent today?
JJ: I think as women we all tend to want what another woman has. We see women all over the world opting to have physical features of another. While I haven’t directly experienced body envy in my new body, I have many people (both male and female) whopreferred me as a full-figured woman. In those moments, it’s important to remind yourself of why you started your journey. It’s never for the approval of others, but to be happy in your own skin.
BDO: What were some of the key things you had to incorporate into your life to lose the weight? What are some of the things you’re doing now to help keep it off?
JJ: I live a very active lifestyle. Fitness is my life and I communicate that with my followers via social media. I work out 5-6 times per week with a mixture of weight lifting and cardio. In addition, I maintain a healthy diet to keep the weight off.
BDO: If you could give vital advice to anyone who wants to also make the lifestyle change, what would you tell them?
JJ: I tell women all the time to go at your own pace. My journey to losing over 50 pounds was a slow progression. Along the road, you learn how to properly eat for your body and needs. This is so vital to maintaining your results. Remember; health is a marathon NOT a sprint. It doesn’t matter who made it to the finish line first, just as long as you made it.
