Psoriasis Lowering Your Confidence? Here’s How To Fix That

psoriasis

Living with psoriasis can be a difficult task to face every day. From daily pain due to inflammation, to insecurities when wearing certain clothing because of the patches of dry, itchy skin that this condition leaves. When living with psoriasis, it’s easy to understand how it could have an effect on your confidence, spike your insecurities or even make you question your self-worth. You’re human and experiencing these feelings are normal, but there are ways to bring that confidence back or even gain some that you may not have had before, all while living with psoriasis.

How Living With Psoriasis Affects Your Daily Life

When being diagnosed with certain conditions and illnesses, everyone experiences how it affects their life and the body differently. In the beginning, some may experience shock, anger, fear, confusion, and even sadness.

Then as time progresses, depressive moods, lack of motivation, tiredness, fatigue and more are all symptoms of what one may experience when living with an illness. When experiencing psoriasis, all these feelings can come up as well because psoriasis can affect you mentally.

Looking at your skin now compared to how it used to be and wishing you could go back in time, being afraid of the judgment that other people might project on you and not feeling like you can wear certain clothing anymore because of this can cause serious anxiety and depression in some people.

Let’s not forget about the physical pain you may face when living with psoriasis. An area on the body is inflamed and it brings discomfort and physical pain. The constant scratching leaves raised, red areas, scars, marks and dry flaky skin. This can stop someone from doing everyday activities because they’re simply in too much pain. The combination of physical and mental stress psoriasis can have on someone can be defeating.

Why Making Sure To Maintain Your Mental Health Is Key

Fun fact: how you think changes how you act and how you feel. Maintaining your mental health as a psoriasis patient is important because this will not only help you rebuild or gain that confidence you need, but it will also help you deal with the physical pain that you experience as well.

Making sure that you take care of your mind will help you in the future when you’re not feeling your best. Finding ways to first acknowledge that you aren’t okay because of how this condition is making you feel is the initial step that is needed. This step will lead you to figure out what to do next.

Finding ways to stay healthy mentally can also help when you experience flare-ups because certain practices such as meditation help you alter your mind in the midst of conflict or in this case, pain. It’s also important to maintain good mental health because if not, it can cause certain disorders and physical pain to worsen.

What You Can Do To Rebuild Your Confidence

There are so many things you can do to rebuild the confidence that psoriasis may have taken from you. As stated previously, making sure you focus on your mental well-being is the initial and most important step.

Try waking up every morning and saying a set of affirmations to yourself in the mirror. Tricking the mind into believing something positive is actually a lot easier than we may think.

Do things that make you feel good often. Treat yourself to something once a week, whether it’s a slice of cake, a new mug or even a relaxing evening consisting of whatever you want to do. Doing something nice for yourself just because is a great way to start boosting your confidence.

That piece of clothing that shows skin, wear it. The only way to get through it is to go through it. If you're feeling insecure about your skin showing in a certain top or certain pants, try wearing it around the house first. Do something simple like wearing it to take out the trash or to go get the mail. It may sound scary but putting yourself out there by doing simple things when a lot of people aren’t around will help you prepare and feel better when you look at yourself or even when going out and being around crowds of people.

Better Treatment Options For You To Choose From

Not everything works for everyone when it comes to certain remedies and medicines. Sometimes prescribed medicines may not help with skin flare-ups.

If that’s the case, try products that are made with natural ingredients when dealing with itchy skin. Creating an oat bath to bathe in a few times a week or buying products that consist of oats and other skin calming properties can provide the relief your body needs.

Maybe the natural ingredients aren’t helping with the pain you experience and you need instant relief. What would it look like to reach out to your doctor and see if they could prescribe you something that could get you that instant relief such as steroids? You could even take steroids in addition to the natural remedy treatments or incorporate essential oils in your skincare routine. Talk to your doctor so you guys can come up with a treatment plan that gives you the relief you need and helps you work on taking your life back from psoriasis.
