This past weekend, I had the pleasure of hosting a workshop at The University of Illinois Champaign – Urbana Women of Color Conference. I had the pleasure of sitting in on Dr. Nameka Bates Keynote address and one of the major things that stood out in her speech is how far we are coming when it comes to unity but how far we have to go when it comes to the dynamics of dating within the black community.
I, Danielle Mitchell, am an African American woman who has only gotten my heart broken by a black man. My story is not uncommon but more so the norm when it comes to African Americans, regardless of education level. African Americans according to studies are one of the most loyal when it comes to dating within our race, so my story is the norm.
While we are in a surge of a new civil rights movement and organizations are popping up left and right, let’s not forget to discuss and hold to a higher standard, the dynamics between romance within the black men and black women.
