Surprising Health Benefits Of Getting A Massage

man temple massage

Who doesn’t love a good massage? I mean, come on! Just five minutes in and you feel like you’ve died and gone to heaven. For most of us, getting a massage is something we do when we want to feel pampered, but believe it or not, there are quite a few health benefits that come along with getting a back rub. If a massage is something that only happens once in a blue moon for you, here are four hard-to-resist excuses to go ahead and book an appointment at your nearest spa right now!

1. Boosts your immune system

When you receive a massage, you’re stimulating lymph flow throughout the body, flushing out pathogens and other toxins from your bloodstream while increasing the amount of white blood cells. The purpose? Your immune system will be able to produce the antibodies it needs to fight off infections, especially during this time of year.

2. Increases your energy levels

Who needs another cup of coffee when you can get a massage? Seriously! Getting frequent massages improves your circulation, which makes it easier for essential nutrients to reach your entire body. Also, because massages are super relaxing, you’ll be able to sleep much better. The more sleep you get, the more rested you feel and the more rested you feel, the more energy you have during the day. It’s the gift that keeps on giving!

3. Makes you look younger

Say goodbye to Botox! A good facial massage can relax your facial muscles and soften those fine lines and wrinkles, giving you a more youthful look. Who wouldn’t want that? And, because massages improve your blood circulation, don’t be surprised when your skin starts looking more radiant. Just a warning: If you suffer from Rosacea, a facial massage can irritate your already-sensitive skin.

4. Relieves stress and anxiety

According to a series of studies conducted by the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine’s Touch Research Institute, massage therapy reduced cortisol – a stress hormone – levels by up 53 percent. These studies included approximately 500 participants with depression or high stress levels. Additionally, massages promote the release of serotonin and dopamine, two neurotransmitters that enhance your mood and help reduce depression.

Most people benefit from massages; however, if you’re pregnant, have a bleeding disorder, deep vein thrombosis, fractures, and/or severe osteoporosis, you may want to discuss the pros and cons with your doctor.
