Jada Paul, wife of Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul, is gearing up for the sixth annual Prom Dress Giveaway and it promises to be a fun and uplifting time for high school girls in Los Angeles.
The annual Prom Dress Giveaway is sponsored by the Chris Paul Family Foundation for 100 young ladies selected by a variety of Los Angeles-based community programs. Each young lady will have the opportunity to select new and vintage jewelry an accessories.
"It's amazing to see how this event has grown over the past six years," says Jada. The event starts with a short program where she and two other speakers will talk to the girls with an empowering message. Then there's a fashion show to preview the dresses that the giveaway has of offer.
Sponsors for the the prom dress giveaway include Winsdor Fashions, Spanx, Steve Madden, Chinese Laundry and Diann Valentine.
"We also do raffles and giveaways. There will be prom hair stations and prom makeup as a little something extra for them to have on top of what they get from the event. Once that’s done the girls are let loose to go shopping. We have dresses, we have shoes, jewelry, there’s purses, there’s spanx and all kinds of stuff. It's a lot of fun."
This event is near and dear to Mrs. Paul's heart because it helps build self esteem in young women.
"It’s very important because we live in a world that’s all about social media, we’re constantly comparing ourselves and trying to be things that we see on TV or on social media," says Jada. "It’s about loving who you are and just owning it and letting that be a building block for you. So we really try to emphasize that with the girls. Of course they get to feel beautiful on prom night, but that inner beauty they feel on that night, they hold on to it and carry it to the next steps of their lives."
"At some point in our lives, we've all been a version of these girls. Whether it's a struggle with self esteem or a struggle financially. So it feels good to know that you're helping someone. A little bit goes a long way."
Jada also hosts the prom dress giveaway in her hometown, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she just held the third annual event in March. "The cool thing is that there's only 12 high schools where I'm from so I can really identify with the girls," she says. "The goal is to grow and do multiple events around the country."
The Prom Dress Giveaway is one of many ventures by the Chris Paul Family Foundation, which has partnered with various organizations including Feed the Children, Make-A-Wish Foundation, The Salvation Army, the Boys & Girls Club and many others to support literacy and technology initiatives, health and wellness programs and after school enrichment.
