Graduated, Now What? 5 Tips to Successfully Transition Back Into Society

It’s graduation season and all across the country, young people are transitioning into new stages of life. From high school to college and from college back into society, graduating can be scary for many young adults as they begin to make decisions that impact the rest of their lives. After the high of graduating wears off, many are left wondering what their next steps are and if they have what it takes to achieve their dreams.

Often times, society tells us we need to have our entire lives planned out with details and goals and that we need to achieve those goals by the time we hit specific ages or else we have failed in life. That can be scary for someone whose life is just beginning. Luckily you don’t have to follow the rules society has laid out for you and below are five tips to help you successfully transition back into society.

1. Don’t feel embarrassed about moving back home with your parents.

After living on your own for four years, moving back home with your parents may not sound like the most glamorous option but it may be the most affordable at the time. There is nothing wrong with living with your parents after graduating college and honestly you may need the time to regroup without worrying about paying rent.

You’ll even begin to see that living with your parents is sometimes easier than living on your own and paying utilities, rent and buying groceries. Enjoy the time you have at home, you have your whole life to be responsible.

2. It is ok if you do not have your life plan together yet.

At graduation you may see many of your friends heading off to grad school or beginning full time jobs or internships. Don’t be intimidated if you are notimmediately beginning a new job or career or if you don’t know what you want to do with the rest of your life. In reality, statistics show most people switch jobs more than a few times in their life before they find a career that fulfills them. You’re young and you have time to start a career and change it before you find what you want to spend your life doing.

3. Create a budget and learn financial responsibility.

One of the best things you can do after graduating college is begin to become financially responsible by creating a budget for yourself. This helps to keep you from making poor financial decisions that take years to correct. A simple budget to keep your finances in order works. Financial expert and author Dave Ramsey has plenty of resources such as books, YouTube videos and apps to help you to get started.

4. Find hobbies you enjoy doing.

While you have down town, find a hobby or activity that you enjoy doing to help fulfill you while you search for a career. If you have hobbies that you love doing, you won’t feel as drained if you have to take a job that you don’t particularly care for.

5. Begin going places and doing things alone

Now that your friends are miles away in different cities, it can be scary living on your own in anew city or back in your home town where you don’t know anyone anymore. It can be a lonely feeling not having anyone close to hang out with but now is the perfect time to get to know yourself by doing things alone.

Adulthood is filled with alone time and many people find that friends and relationships begin to drift a part, so it’s best to begin to go places like restaurants, art museums and concerts alone to get comfortable with being by yourself. Getting to know what you like and dislike is essential to becoming a healthy adult and will help when you begin new relationships.

Graduation season can bring waves of emotions like happiness, anxiety, worry, excitement and more. Don’t let your emotions overwhelm you. Relax, take a deep breath and enjoy your moment. Everything will work out the way it’s supposed to.
