Lead singer of the hit 90’s R&B group Jodeci, K-Ci, has been forced to cancel some appearances after he’s been battling a scary health condition.

According to a report from TMZ, the singer was diagnosed with pneumonia after he was hospitalized for the condition. However, the outlet has gone on to report that he has since been sent home and is recovering after being treated with antibiotics.

Born Cedric Renard Hailey, K-Ci, as well as the rest of Jodeci, were forced to cancel their shows as he recovers. Despite their cancellation, the group is planning on rescheduling the dates and all of the remaining shows after this weekend are set to proceed as normal.

Jodeci member Mr. Dalvin shared news of K-Ci’s illness and the show cancellations in an Instagram video on Wednesday. He said that he was “looking forward” to this weekend’s concerts but that “as we were gearing up to hit the stage and do our thing, K-Ci came down with pneumonia.”

He added, “Keep my brother in your prayers, and get well soon, K. But we’ll be back, and looking forward to seeing you guys real soon. Love each and every one of you.”

Why Pneumonia Over 50 is So Serious

K-Ci is over 55 and now poses a serious health risk with pneumonia. Pneumonia is a serious health risk for people over 50, because the risk of complications increases with age. This is due to a number of factors, including a weakened immune system, chronic health conditions, and frailty.

Older people can also get pneumonia from hospitals or extended stays in medical facilities. Both of these environments are full of germs and strains of pneumonia that may be more difficult to treat with antibiotics.

Usually, when elderly people go to the hospital, the organisms that cause pneumonia are Streptococcus pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Streptococcus pneumoniae usually happens on its own after you have a cold or the flu. Mycoplasma pneumoniae, or “walking pneumonia,” is a milder strain of pneumonia that doesn’t usually require bed rest.

Pneumonia can be caused by fungi. This is a type of pneumonia that older people should be particularly careful of. It primarily affects people with chronic health issues. It comes from inhaling certain kinds of fungi in the soil or bird droppings.

Older people should be aware that viruses, such as the one that causes COVID-19, can also cause pneumonia. Other viruses that cause colds and the flu are also in this category. In most cases, viral pneumonia is mild, but it can become serious.

Risk factors

  • Immune system: The immune response weakens with age.
  • Chronic health conditions: Heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic conditions are more common in older people.
  • Muscle weakness: Frailty and muscle weakness can make it hard to cough up phlegm.
  • Other conditions: Parkinson’s disease and other conditions can increase the risk of pneumonia.

Symptoms

  • Fever, sweating, increased breathing rate
  • Bluish lips or nailbeds
  • Chest pain
  • Confusion or delirium
  • Trouble breathing

The CDC recommends that people 50 and older get vaccinated against pneumonia. The vaccine also protects against other infections caused by pneumococcus bacteria.

How Jodeci Made Their Mark in Music

Jodeci is one of the most influential R&B groups of the 1990s. The group is composed of two sets of brothers—K-Ci and JoJo, along with DeVante Swing and Mr. Dalvin. After they signed to Uptown Records, Jodeci quickly gained a reputation for their fusion of gospel-influenced vocals with New Jack Swing beats.

Their debut album, Forever My Lady (1991), brought them mainstream success with three straight Billboard R&B No. 1 hit singles: the album’s titular track, “Stay” and “Come and Talk to Me”.

The group’s critical and commercial success continued with the releases of Diary of a Mad Band (1993), which includes the Billboard hit singles “Cry for You” and “Feenin'”, and The Show, the After Party, the Hotel (1995), which includes the additional Billboard hit singles “Freek’n You”, “Love U 4 Life”, and “Get On Up”.

The group experimented with various musical styles typically not associated with traditional R&B. Jodeci would incorporate hip hop soul, gospel and new jack swing into their music, which led to the group featured prominently with hip hop artists during the 1990s. Each album released by the group during this period attained platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and helped to redefine the genre, allowing for developments in thematic and musical content within R&B.

In 1996, they announced a hiatus – though continuing to work on music as a group – which prompted K-Ci & JoJo to branch off as a duo, releasing five albums until 2013, when the group re-united for their fourth studio album, The Past, the Present, the Future (2015). Jodeci has sold more than 20 million records worldwide to date. Complex magazine ranks the group 1st on their “1990s Male R&B Group Pyramid of Excellence” list in 2014, one of the most influential groups of the 1990s, and the best R&B group of all time.
