How’s your underarm game? Have you ever thought about underarm self-care and how your daily routine is impacting your health?
During an exclusive spa event with Dove at the JW Marriot Spa in Chicago, I had a chance to enjoy a day of beauty, wellness, and relaxation.
When you’re on the go, you typically don’t realize how your actions are impacting different parts of your body. But after a discussion with Dermatologist Dr. Alicia Barba, I was enlightened and had a better awareness of underarm science and care.
Here are my top takeaways from my discussion with Dr. Barba:
1. Know The Difference Between Deodorant And Antiperspirant
Did you know that deodorants and antiperspirants are not the same? Nope! They are not created equally so you must first understand your personal needs to determine what works best for you.
Deodorants just mask the smell; they don’t stop the sweat. You don’t get the active ingredient (aluminum chloride salt) that temporarily blocks the sweat glands. If you just need deodorant, Dove has deodorants with skincare benefits. Dove Go Fresh 0% Aluminum Cucumber & Green Tea provides you with all-day freshness and moisture.
If sweating is an issue for you, you need an antiperspirant. The active ingredients stop overactive sweat glands from producing more sweat. While deodorants don’t contain the antiperspirant benefits, you can get the deodorizing smell-relief from an antiperspirant. Dove gives you the option of a stick or dry spray antiperspirants that are FDA approved with aluminum chloride. Use the Dove Advanced Care Cool Essentials Antiperspirant to help you stay fresh and dry when you are bombarded with stressful situations at work.
No matter if you’re using Dove deodorants or antiperspirants, you’ll get ¼ moisturizers in your products to take care of the delicate skin under the arms.
2. Understand How Changes In Weather Impacts Your Skin
When the weather changes, our skin changes too! But you may not be able to take a break from your underarm routine just because of weather changes.
The way that we take care of our skin during the winter is not the same way that we care for it during the winter. It mainly has to do with the need for a lot of hydration.
Our skin gets dry in the winter because there is less humidity in the hair. We use heaters that suck moisture out of the skin. We also wear scarves, sweaters, gloves, and jackets and that pulls moisture away from the skin by way of friction. Long hot showers melt natural moisturizers from the surface of the skin. You’re rubbing off all the good stuff your skin produces the longer you are in the shower. All of these factors come in to dehydrate the stratum corneum - the skin’s first line of defense against the external environment.
When your skin gets really dry, you can get rashes and become itchy. It’s important to keep a moisturized stratum corneum because biologically we need to do it so that our skin doesn’t suffer from dermatitis and lead to rashes and eczema.
3. Create A Plan To Attack Sweat Throughout The Day
Are you sweating profusely throughout the day? Start with an antiperspirant. Dove gives you the option of a stick or dry spray that both provide 48-hour protection against wetness and odor. The products also moisturize the sensitive skin underneath the arm with the ¼ moisturizers.
Don’t get locked into a routine of just using your antiperspirant once a day. Take it with you and use it 2-3 times a day. First, you want to wipe yourself down with a deodorant wipe and then reapply your deodorant. Dove Go Fresh Deodorant Wipes are infused with moisturizers that leave you with a refreshing cucumber and green tea scent. It’s the perfect way to stay on top of your everyday self-care routine when your sweat glands start to run wild.
