“This is reality, without it being a reality show. Every generation has issues that we explore can relate to and enjoy this program,” explains Avery. “Mary Jane is someone who I may have played, but opportunities weren’t open for African American women.”
She is a new public advocate for continued Lupus research and education through the Lupus Foundation of America; a cause preempted by personally knowing individuals living with Lupus as well as playing a character who suffers from the disease on BET’s Being Mary Jane.
