Recently, a TikTok video went viral on social media after a mom documented her 3-year-old getting a sew-in.
According to her TikTok page, All That Jazz is a licensed cosmetologist who wanted to use a sew-in to cover up patches of hair loss on her daughter Cady’s hair. Cady’s mom explained that when she was a baby, she had a habit of pulling the side of her hair, which caused it to fall out. So they are turning to traditional sew-ins to help her hair grow. The mom showed her washing her daughter’s hair, braiding it down, and sewing in curly hair tracks to add ‘volume’ to the back of her head. She later added colorful butterfly clips to make the hairstyle more youthful.
The video has received mixed reviews online. While some support the mom’s decision, one TikTok user stated, "This is how you add hair to a child's head!" Others strongly disagree. Some users explained that they don’t know if they "...believe there is a need for a 3-year-old to have a sew-in."
@allthatjazzglamincould you put a sew in in your toddlers hair?! I mean y’all are doing braids with braiding hair and beads and crochets so what’s the difference? She has only raw human hair in her head and it’s undetectable! We used @designessentials products for her shampoo and love how the Honey Crème adds a ton of humectants to her hair and allows our conditioner to seal in moisture. The (1/4) of a bundle was the deep curly texture from @theglamstrand Cady LOVED the outcome!♬ original sound - ALL THAT JAZZ GLAM INC
While we understand that some parents are eager to ensure their child has a full head of hair, sometimes that is just not the reality, and there are more effective ways to promote hair growth.
Tight cornrows and sewing in the hair tracks can put too much tension on someone’s scalp, which can result in more hair loss, instead of hair growth.
Here are a few other ways you can help your kids' hair grow and flourish.

Moisturize and detangle hair
One of the biggest things that will help hair growth is finding the right products for your child’s hair that will aid in gently detangling their locks. This will ensure that their hair never gets dry, which can lead to split ends and breakage.
You can go a step further and find a great hair oil to seal in the moisture. Avocado, castor, and coconut oils are great options.
Choose low-manipulation protective styles
Your child’s scalp is still very tender during their early years of life. It is best to find low-manipulation protective hairstyles that will not cause too much tension on the scalp while keeping it out of the way. This is perfect for kids who like to pull and tug on their hair.
There are tons of protective hairstyles that are perfect for the playground and do not require constant combing and detangling. It is best to keep the protective style in for about a week.
Master your wash day with a gentle shampoo and deep conditioner
Keeping the scalp clean is crucial when it comes to hair growth. Finding a gentle shampoo will not only make wash days easier, but it will also help remove dirt, sweat, and product buildup on the scalp.
Make wash day easy and find a moisturizing deep conditioner so you can skip the conditioner stage.
Protect their hair at night
To avoid breakage, it is important to keep your hair protected at night! There are so many kid-friendly satin bonnets and hair scarves available. If you have a kid who tosses and turns a lot when they sleep, look into purchasing a satin pillowcase, which is just as great as a bonnet or scarf!
As a reminder, hair growth varies for everyone, especially kids. Follow a healthy hair routine, and you will notice healthy changes. Always let your kid know their hair is beautiful, no matter what stage it is at!
