To me, the most striking feature of actress Tracee Ellis Ross is her full head of natural, wavy hair. It's reminiscent of a certain pop culture icon, isn’t it? Someone who rose to fame through Motown Records in the 1960s, right? What’s her name? Oh yeah…Diana Ross!
Well, if you didn’t know by now, now you know that Tracee Ross is Diana Ross’s daughter. No wonder her hair is so striking, making her the hair crush of women around the world.
Having less hair confidence in the past, Tracee looked up to her mother, who is a true trendsetter on so many different levels, including hair style. In an interview with PEOPLE Magazine, Tracee let it all “hang out”.
“My mom was a natural texture person and it was always the bigger the better. She loves my hair big and out and she always has," the Black-ish star told the magazine. "
"Even though I grew up with the image of my mother wearing her hair that way, I hadn’t really seen it elsewhere, so it still has taken courage to wear my hair natural and not feel the pressure to straighten it.” Tracee recalls, “I remember going through a phase where I even put beer in my hair, because I was told that would make it smooth and curly.” Now, the fear of wearing her hair out is nonexistent.
Here is what Tracee does to keep her hair big, bold and beautiful.Let’s start with maintenance. “I wash twice a week unless I work out a lot and then I’ll wash more. Every two months I’ll get a trim and every two years I’ll get a cut. And my night ritual is that I go to sleep. I don’t wrap my hair, I don’t bun my hair, I don’t do crap!” Right off the bat, Tracee makes it easy on herself. With certain challenges of natural hair such as styling, moisturizing, shrinkage and remaining patient for it to grow out, it must be nice to be able to just go to sleep as opposed to preparing the hair for bed when you are tired, right?
For stylizing Tracee uses a hair blower to blow her hair out. But we all know that actresses are busy people, so what happens when she does not have the time to do so? She still finds a way to get the look she wants. “If I have an 8:00 a.m. call and I work out at 6:00 a.m., I don’t have time to get my hair blown out before going on camera. On Black-ish we work in a lot of different natural styles. One of my favorite products is Amla’s edge tamer. It’s perfect for slicking down flyaways and giving hair that freshly washed look.” Apparantly, Tracee is a huge of Amla hair products. “They’re all about rejuvenating your hair. They give you the look that you want, but long term, they’re actually helping your hair get healthier. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! That’s my favorite thing about the Amla products.”
Excitingly, natural hair wear is becoming increasingly popular by the day. More and more, Black women are wearing our hair the way it is meant to be – out there! Noticing the trend, Ross explained, “I’m loving the natural hair movement. It’s really encouraging and is expanding the definition of beauty.”
