Almost a third of local health departments nationally do not regulate or inspect pools, making scrutiny by the public even more vital, the agency said.
There are basic steps people can take when visiting the pool to diminish the risk of getting sick. While the CDC advises using test strips, Glatter said people can:
1. You can ask to see that pool’s maintenance records, showing you the last time the pool was cleaned
2. See if that pool was closed in the past due to regulation violations
3. Be sure to shower before AND after the pool, which will help keep bacteria from entering the pool or coming home with you.
