Andrea NaTay: “Ditch the Weight & Guns” Englewood 5K Walk & Run was organized to promote physical activity, nutrition, and gun violence prevention. Growing up and also as a current resident and business owner in Englewood, I have personally experienced the pain of losing both family and friends to gun violence. The common denominator in under resourced and underserved communities, such as Greater Englewood (Englewood and West Englewood), is poverty. In the City of Chicago, rates of crime, diabetes, heart disease, death, suicide, cancer, and gun violence, within the Greater Englewood community, exceed rates in other communities. Lack of education, adequate heath care, adequate mental health facilities, economic development, access to physical activity amenities, job opportunities, accessibility and affordability of fresh fruits and vegetables, are all contributing factors of poverty. Health is not an amenity that should be exclusive to those of a certain economic social class; health is a civil right. The race is an opportunity for the City of Chicago to visit the Greater Englewood community as we promote physical activity, nutrition, and gun violence prevention in unity. The 3rd Annual “Ditch the Weight & Guns” Englewood 5K Walk and Run takes place on October 23, 2016.
