It's no secret that black people sometimes receive unfair treatment at certain establishments. Now more than ever it's becoming important to be more conscious about where we spend our dollars. By allowing our money to circulate in the black community, we all thrive and WIN!
The leg work it takes to research new black-owned businesses to support can sometimes discourage us from trying something new. Lucky for us, Edward Dillard is doing his best to make it easier for consumers. We can now discover black-owned restaurants via EatBlackOwned.com.
From soul food to African cuisine, and even vegan food, this new website introduces us to a whole new way to satisfy our cravings! You never know, you may find your new favorite restaurant.
EatBlackOwned.com was launched in June of 2019 after months of research and features a database of over 2,000 black-owned restaurants. As the consumer, all you have to do is type in your location. From there, the website reveals the names, addresses, and phone numbers of all the nearby listings. This database, and databases like it that focus on black-owned businesses, are important as we strive to do everything we can to build up our communities.
Dillard did an interview with The Charleston Chronicle, during which he stated, “There’s only one thing that everyone in this world has in common: we all love great tasting food. I believe that if people have a place where they can find all the minority-owned restaurants in this country, more of us will start to support these small businesses. Ninety-three cents of every dollar spent by Black consumers produce no economic benefit for the Black community, as the dollar only circulates in the community for six hours.”
With the growing trend of minority-owned businesses between 2007 and 2012 in 48 states and the number of black-owned restaurants surging to 49% between 2007 and 2012, according to the National Restaurant Association and Small Business Trends respectively, it's a no-brainer why websites like EatBlackOwned.com are so essential.
“I hope this website will get more people to support Black-owned businesses,“ Dillard said. “There’s a huge racial wealth gap in this country. We need to do everything we can to build ourselves up.”
If you are a black-owned restaurant or know of one that should be added to the EatBlackOwned.com database, it's not too late! Simply complete an online form, which will ask for the name of the business, the location, contact information, any images or videos, and any social media handles. There's also an option to choose between a basic FREE listing or a paid FEATURED listing!
Let's do our best to support more black-owned businesses going forward!
