‘Tis the season for tricks and treats, spiced sweets and fancy feasts. While the transition from summer to fall can take a toll on your waistline, before you lose your mojo, check out some of our top weight loss hacks to avoid the “freshman fifteen” this holiday season.
1. Keep the momentum of summer going
Check out coupon apps like LivingSocial and Groupon for deals on fitness classes. By stocking up for fall, chances are you’ll be much more motivated to hit the Stairmaster throughout the holiday season.
2. Retire early
The early bird gets the worm, one study says, alleging that sleep can really affect your weight.
Skimping on your beauty sleep sets the brain up for making bad decisions, including leaning on that vanilla latte to get you moving in the morning, skipping out on the gym, or grabbing a fast (food) dinner – all things that will quickly expand your waistline.

3. Fall begs for warm tea
Drinking green tea first thing in the morning will boost your immune system as well as help with digestion throughout the day.
According to a study cited in DailyMail, the magical green elixir also burns fat (if you drink enough of it).

4. Reach for the canned pumpkin
One slice of pumpkin pie can run upwards of 320 calories, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
However, canned pumpkin is a great way to get your fix and watch your waistline. At just 82 calories per cup, you can add it to pancakes, oatmeal, or even a pumpkin pineapple cocktail.
5. Get in on the trick or treating
Some experts say that you can have “everything in moderation.” Sure, the rule doesn’t apply to everyone, as different food groups – like candy – affect each and every one of us differently.
But, that doesn’t mean you have to deprive yourself. Instead, allow yourself one to two pieces of candy (preferably from your own stash an not your child’s) a day.
6. Pass on the PSL
As we enter the holiday season, we’re instantly bombarded with all things Pumpkin Spice, Eggnog, Peppermint Mocha, Christmas Cookie and Caramel Brulée.
Unfortunately for coffee lovers, one pumpkin spice latte (PSL) (grande/Starbucks) can run you 390 calories – a venti, 470 calories. To add some perspective, that’s the equivalent of two candy bars.
7. Un-stuff your stuffing
I’d be lying if I said this one didn’t hit me in the heart. But, according to the USDA, 1/3 cup of bread stuffing can run you upwards of 162 calories.
Instead, opt for a medley of kale, butternut squash (or zucchini), tomatoes, quinoa, and other fall faves for a great source of antioxidants and vitamins.
