Singer Bobby Brown has been through a lot in life: From being a hit singer in a group, to being kicked out. Then going on a successful tour and marrying the woman in his dreams, hit singer Whitney Houston. Then to not only lose her, but still have a great relationship with their daughter. Then he also loses his daughter in a way that is eerily similar to his late ex-wife. Then on top of all that, losing his son, who's also his namesake, Bobby Brown, Jr. in 2021 is too hard for anyone to take. But Bobby is still standing.
He details many of these things in his memoir Every Little Step.
The 54-year-old New Edition singer recounts the moment that he met Whitney in an interview on 20/20.
Brown and the late Houston were married for 15 years. In the new ABC interview, Brown tells Roberts he's still deeply in love with Houston.
"For the rest of my life, I will have that feeling towards her because she was the one person that knew me – that one person who had no judgement."
In his book, Brown writes he broke tradition and peeked in on Houston prior to the ceremony, and was "shocked" to witness Houston "hunched over a bureau snorting a line of coke."
"Seeing her do that made me want to love her and protect her," Brown says.
Houston offered Brown a hit, he claims, but he didn't indulge. Brown also writes his bride-to-be said she was indulging in the illegal drug because she was "nervous."
Houston's official cause of death was accidental drowning, though the Los Angeles County coroner's office confirmed the 48-year-old singer had cocaine in her system. Contributing factors of her death included heart disease and cocaine use, an investigation found. The report also found that Houston had marijuana, Xanax, Benadryl and other medication in her system.
Brown told Roberts that the couple would lock themselves in one wing of their mansion and go on cocaine binges while nannies looked after baby daughter Bobbi Kristina in another part of the house. But he maintains they never did drugs in front of their daughter.
"I always made it a point never to let her see me or my wife in that situation," he said, though he admitted that it became harder to cover up their daily use.
It's an eerie feeling that Bobby admits talking to his daughter and convincing her to move to LA with him just two days before she was found unconscious in a bathtub, just like her mother was found before her death.
Bobbi Kristina spent nearly seven months in a medically-induced coma after being found unresponsive, a little more than three years after her famous mother drowned in the bathtub inside her Beverly Hilton hotel suite.
The legendary singer's only child was discovered face-down and submerged by longtime boyfriend Nick Gordon, who was later found legally responsible for her death and ordered to pay more than $36 million to her family.
He also admitted, "We failed Bobbi Kris. We could have been better. We should have been better. To be so...
...young and have everything we wanted was a blessing and a curse."
During the interview, Bobby broke down when talking about his daughter.
"If I could get the two days before they found her...Those two days. If I can get those two days back. My daughter would be here."
"That's all I want is those two days back."
Bobby ends the interview on a positive note. "There might be tears in my eyes, but I'm happy now. God isn't finished with me yet."
