Pride Month is observed all around the globe throughout the month of June. During this time, people from all walks of life join together to celebrate and show their support for persons who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or asexual.
Supporting Pride and having a negative attitude about it have both been topics of heated debate from the beginning of time. During the 19th and 20th centuries, several countries and areas worldwide passed laws that made it illegal to have relationships with people of the same sexual orientation.
Being gay or participating in activities encompassing both sexes was seen as immoral at the time. And was a crime that may result in legal repercussions.
The Government
At this time, you could be arrested due to the government keeping lists of known homosexuals to find others and arrest them. Because of this, people a part of this community started safe havens where they could hang out and be themselves.
On June 28, 1969, one of these safe havens, The Stonewall Inn, was raided, and everyone was ID’ed and checked to see if they were clothed as their born gender before getting arrested.
Because of these, the individuals in this safe haven fought back in the best way they could for 3 days, and this was the beginning of LGBTQA+ members finding their power and sticking up for themselves.
After that, a year later, the first pride march was held. Because of this, every June, we celebrate Pride Month.
Members Of Pride Month
Being a member of Pride has always been problematic since it is discriminated against, scrutinized, and viewed differently. Historically, the community has experienced difficulty receiving acceptance and equality, resulting in a decline in the stigma associated with mental illness.
