Lizzo On Overcoming Depression: “I’m the Happiest I’ve Been in 10 Months”

Lizzo

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Grammy-winning singer Lizzo who is known for her empowering anthems and unapologetic self-love, revealed that she’s finally emerging from a challenging period of depression. “I’m the happiest I’ve been in 10 months,” the 36-year-old artist shared, expressing relief and optimism as she continues to work on her mental health.

“The strange thing about depression is you don’t know you’re in it until you’re out of it. I’m definitely not all the way as carefree as I used to be... But the dark cloud that followed me every day is finally clearing up,” Lizzo wrote. Her candid words resonated with fans, offering a glimpse into the emotional struggles that have accompanied her public persona over the past year.

Lizzo’s recent struggles were intensified by a legal battle with her former backup dancers, who accused her of sexual and racial harassment and creating a hostile work environment.

The singer, whose real name is Melissa Jefferson, has staunchly denied these allegations. In a lengthy statement on social media, she addressed the accusations, stating, “My work ethic, morals and respectfulness have been questioned. My character has been criticized. Usually I choose not to respond to false allegations but these are as unbelievable as they sound... too outrageous not to be addressed.”

The court denied Lizzo’s petition to dismiss the lawsuit in February, prolonging her legal woes. By March, the weight of the scrutiny and criticism seemed to take a toll on her mental health.

She shared another emotional statement, revealing, “I’m getting tired of putting up with being dragged by everyone in my life and on the internet. All I want is to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little better than how I found it. But I’m starting to feel like the world doesn’t want me in it. I’m constantly up against lies being told about me for clout & views... being the butt of the joke every single time because of how I look.”

Her post culminated with the phrase “I quit,” which led many to speculate that she was stepping back from social media. However, in April, the "About Damn Time" singer clarified her statement, saying, “When I say I quit, I mean I quit giving any negative energy attention.”

Despite the setbacks, Lizzo has shown resilience and determination to reclaim her joy. In her recent post, she emphasized her commitment to focusing on the positive aspects of her life and career.

“What I’m not going to quit is the joy of my life which is making music, which is connecting with people because I know I’m not alone. In no way shape or form am I the only person who is experiencing that negative voice that seems to be louder than the positive,” she explained.

Now, with a renewed sense of purpose and a brighter outlook, Lizzo is channeling her positive energy into new music. “My smile reaches my eyes again and that’s a win. I thought my album was finished.. but I gotta get some of these good vibes off in a banger real quick,” she teased.

Lizzo’s last album, "Special", was released in 2022, and in January, she shared a video of herself in the studio, hinting at new music in the works. “The magic is back,” she wrote, much to the delight of her fans.

Lizzo concluded her uplifting message with gratitude for her supporters, writing, “Thanks for your patience ❤️.”

Tips For Combatting Depression

Lizzo’s journey offers hope and encouragement for anyone struggling with depression. Here are some tips to help manage depression:

  1. Seek Professional Help: Don’t hesitate to reach out to a mental health professional, such as a therapist or psychiatrist. They can provide the necessary support and treatment options, including therapy and medication.
  2. Stay Connected: Isolation can worsen depression. Stay connected with friends and family who can offer support and understanding. Joining support groups can also be beneficial.
  3. Practice Self-Care: Engage in activities that you enjoy and that promote relaxation. This can include hobbies, exercise, or spending time in nature. Prioritizing self-care can help improve your mood and overall well-being.
  4. Establish a Routine: Having a daily routine can provide structure and a sense of normalcy. Try to maintain regular sleep patterns, eat nutritious meals, and set small, achievable goals.
  5. Mindfulness and Meditation: Practices like mindfulness and meditation can help you stay present and manage negative thoughts. Techniques such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided imagery can also be helpful.
  6. Avoid Negative Coping Mechanisms: Avoid using alcohol, drugs, or other harmful behaviors to cope with depression. These can exacerbate symptoms and lead to additional problems.
  7. Celebrate Small Wins: Recognize and celebrate small achievements, no matter how minor they may seem. This can help build confidence and a sense of accomplishment.
  8. Be Kind to Yourself: Practice self-compassion. Understand that it’s okay to have bad days and that recovery is a gradual process.
