MC Lyte has one more thing to smile about besides her 25-plus year career, multiple businesses and catalog of timeless hip hop hits. The "Lyte As A Rock" hitmaker is glowing because she just celebrated her one-year wedding anniversary with her husband she met online (that's right, online--there's still hope for us, girl!).
We first reported on the loving couple back in May 2017 when she announced that she was engaged after releasing pictures of her and her beau, Marine Corp Veteran and entrepreneur John Wyche, on social media earlier in the year.
The intimate gathering of family and friends was held at the Sandals Royal Caribbean Resort with the backdrop of a beautiful Jamaican beach. Lyte walked down the aisle to reggae Congo bands while long-time friend Kelly Price serenaded the couple during their ceremony communion and the newlyweds along with their guests celebrated the nuptials with DJ Jermaine.
The wedding was planned and executed by Bobette Gillette and Andre Wells of Events by André Wells and the ceremony’s officiant was Elder Robert Pierce. Other guests included YoYo, Niatia “ Lil Mama” Kirkland, Tai Beauchamp and SWV’s Coko.
“It’s incredible so many people came out to support our union. We are starting out with a strong foundation,” Wyche told Essence.com. “A few months into getting to know Lana I knew I wanted this woman as my wife.” And his wife realized it as well. “One day when we're talking and I looked into his eyes. It was so much honesty and truth in his eyes,” Lyte says. “My biggest thing with dating was to be vulnerable. And with him, I could totally let go and be myself.”
Lyte first started gushing about her new beau earlier this year with an Instagram post announcing the handsome stranger.
“What can I say, except thank you Lord!” the rapper shared on social media in 2017. “It’s been a long time, this single life, and I thank you all for your prayers and kind words of hope. God has sent me true love.”
In years past, people speculated that Lyte may have been a lesbian and rumors have circulated that Lyte was in relationships with Tichina Arnold from Martin, Queen Latifah, rapper Lil’ Mama and even singer/actress Janelle Monae. But she put those rumors to rest with her Instagram post showcasing her true love.
Concluding her message, she uses her own journey as a way to inspire others, adding, “For all of you waiting on LOVE – don’t give up. Keep God first and he will see that you meet your match.”
Forget what you may see on reality TV, MC Lyte proves there really is "Love and Hip Hop." We congratulate Lyte on finding her "roughneck!"
