Q&A: Discontinued Inhalers

Q: I have used an albuterol inhaler for a few years. I picked up my prescription from the pharmacy today and was given Pro-Air and told that you can no longer purchase albuterol inhalers in the U.S. because they are damaging to the environment. I was told this went into effect January 1st. Is there any truth to this?

A:
All inhalers containing chlorofluorocarbon propellants have been discontinued because they are harmful to the environment. Therefore, there are currently no generic albuterol inhalers available on the market. ProAir, Ventolin, Proventil and other albuterol inhalers now contain hydroflourocarbons, which are less toxic to the environment. I would suggest talking to your healthcare provider to determine the best treatment for your condition.
