As if there was any doubt from her performance in the past Olympics, Simone Biles, as of today, is so close to being cemented as the greatest gymnast ever to have competed in the world championships.
Biles won gold on vault Saturday, her 23rd medal at the world gymnastics championships. That ties the record for most world medals, 23, set by Vitaly Scherbo of Belaru.
Biles is all but assured of having the worlds medal record to herself by the time the meet ends. She competes on uneven bars later Saturday, and is on the balance beam and floor exercise finals Sunday. She is the reigning world champion on floor and was the silver medalist on bars and bronze medalist on beam last year.
Biles won her fifth world all-around title in early October by dominating the field at the 2019 World Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany.
Biles competed last Thursday in four disciplines against the top 23 gymnasts from the qualifying round. Her combined score was 58.999, earning her the all-around gold by a wide margin of more than 2 points.
Xijing Tang of China placed second with 56.899. Russian gymnast Angelina Melnikova collected the bronze, with an overall score of 56.399.
Simone Biles became a household name when she won four gold medals in gymnastics at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Three years later, she has proven that she's still among the best in the sport's history. At the 2019 Gymnastics World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, Biles won her 21st world champ medal—making her the most decorated female gymnast of all time, The New York Times reports.
The U.S. women's team competed at the event in order to retain their title of best in the world. Biles racked up the highest individual scores with her vault, balance beam, and floor routines, helping the U.S. earn an overall score of 172.330 points. The team bested Russia, the second-place team, by 5.801 points and won their seventh consecutive gold at a world competition or Olympics.
Biles was previously tied with Svetlana Khorkina for most world championship medals held by a female gymnast. She now holds the record for the women's sport, and is just two medals shy of male gymnast Vitaly Scherbo's record of 23.
At 22, Simone Biles has already made a historic impact on the sport. In 2013, she had... a difficult new floor exercise move named after her—a double layout with a 180-degree turn at the end.
In order for a gymnast to have a move named after them, they must submit it for consideration and successfully land it at a major competition, such as the world championships or the Olympics.
On Saturday, Biles began her floor routine at the 2019 gymnastic world championships in Stuttgart, Germany by landing a triple-double, composed of a double backflip with three twists. That move will now be known as the "Biles II."
The gymnast also nailed her double-double dismount from the balance beam. The move, which consists of a double-twisting double backflip, will now be named the "Biles."
