Legendary rapper Snoop Dogg, aka "The Dogg Father" or "Snoop D-O Double G" says he is giving up marijuana – or at least, smoking it.
“After much consideration & conversation with my family, I’ve decided to give up smoke,” the rapper, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, told his 82.5 million followers on Instagram.
“Please respect my privacy at this time.”
The news comes as a shock to some and the hip-hop icon has been open about his longtime support and love of weed. He has launched several business ventures related to marijuana, including a pot-focused media company called “Merry Jane,” and a line of cannabis products.
He has also invested in Casa Verde Capital, a venture capital firm that invests in marijuana start-ups.
His love for weed is truly legendary--he even claims to have smoked in The White House with a couple of presidents.
Many say Snoop's newfound view on weed comes after becoming a grandfather because he wants to see his grandchildren grow old - despite employing a blunt roller, Renegade Piranha, who claims Snoop smokes 150 joints a day. Piranha earns more than $50,000-a-year just to roll them.
Speaking in October, Piranha told Australia's The Kyle and Jackie O Show that her boss likes to smoke about half a pound of marijuana each day, the equivalent of 75 to 150 joints.
'I calculate it at over 450,000,' Piranha said during the interview on the number of blunts she's rolled for the rap artist.
The veteran rapper’s open appreciation for the drug has extended to numerous business ventures, among them edibles, weed strains and a digital media business devoted to marijuana-related news.
Snoop insists his weed habit was scrutinized after eldest child Cordé became a father to son Zion in 2015.
"Being a grandfather has changed me in multiple ways," he told MailOnline. "The main way is being concerned with how I live, how I move, the kind of people I’m associated with, because I want to see my grandkids grow old."
"The only way I can do that is to take precautionary steps as far as how I move, who I hang out with, where I go out, my intake, what am I intaking?"
"Am I doing extra-curricular or am I just doing what I’m supposed to be doing?"
While there are a number of health benefits to smoking week, there are also some drawbacks.
Facts about Marijuana
- A 2007 study found that smoking one joint had as much effect on obstructing a person's lung airways as smoking 2.5 to 5 tobacco cigarettes. The same study also found users had decreased lung density.

Fellow rapper Meek Mill announced on Thursday that he's going to follow in Snoop's footsteps and "completely stop smoking."
Meek revealed his doctor not only informed him that he has "a lil bit emphysema," but also warned him about potentially cutting his "lifeline in half" if he continued smoking.
