Feathers, fashion, and fun were the assignment for the 10th Anniversary Blue Jacket Fashion Show, a Feb. 4 charity event held in support of ZERO Prostate Cancer. The night of glitz and glamour never overshadowed the serious reason that some of the biggest names in entertainment, sports and journalism were gathered in New York City — Prostate Cancer.
BlackDoctor was on the scene — from going live on the “blue carpet” to livestreaming the event on our YouTube, Facebook, and website — as a media partner with ZERO for this can’t-miss event that unites top celebrities, actors, athletes, models, journalists — including former CNN anchor Don Lemon— fashion, and advocates to raise money and awareness about the disease. Held on World Cancer Day and during Black History Month, BJFS also highlighted health disparities as Prostate Cancer disproportionately impacts Black men — who are 70% more likely to be diagnosed and twice as likely to die from the disease.

Despite the fashion show’s name implying blue jackets were the look du jour, designers and stylists’ creativity knew no bounds as capes, blue-dyed angel wings, head wraps and bedazzled ensembles ripped the runway at Lavan in midtown Manhattan.
The stars opened up on their personal experiences battling prostate cancer, like ZERO Global Ambassador and NBA legend Alan Houston, who walked the runway in his own FISLL fashion wear with his 24-year-old son, Alan Houston III. The New York Kicks shooting guard shared the importance of handing down the generational health history to his son after his grandfather and father had also battled the disease.
Others like, Beauty in Black star actor Ricco Ross, also a ZERO Prostate Cancer Global Ambassador, shared how educating himself on the disease nearly a decade ago and it’s devastating impact on Black men, led him to actively advocate for early detection, preventative screenings, and raising awareness particularly to the Black community.

In addition to the Houstons and Ross, walking the runway was Ja Rule, Carson Kressley, Bill Nye the Science Guy, NY Fox 5’s Mike Woods, actor Chris Noth, comedian and actor Mario Cantone, celebrity stylist Ty-Ron Mayes, Ike Ejochi, , and George Whipple ZERO Chief Mission Officer Brian Bragg.
Journalist Don Lemon didn’t walk the runway, but despite his newsmaking arrest last week, he told the audience why he couldn’t miss this major event, now celebrating its 10th event.
The event featured partnerships with organizations like Johnson & Johnson, ManCave Health, ZERO Prostate Cancer and BlackDoctor, all working together to educate men about getting screened.
