6 Foods To Avoid On Dates

African American man grossed out, horizontalIt’s cool that you can afford Ruth Chris on your first date, but if you get the wrong thing off the menu you’ve spent about $140 for no reason. Going ham on that garlic bread or ordering that potato au gratin might make you a candidate for some well needed breath strips. Sitting across the table from someone with bad breath is painful, so we’ve compiled a list of things you shouldn’t order on dates. In close quarters your breath can be the connector to the next date, or your date saying “check please” 12 minutes into the date. We’ll let you decide what your next steps should be after reading this.

1. Garlic

The Red Lobster cheddar biscuits are mad delicious, yet eating too many of them will have your breath going “hum da dum dum dummmmm.” Garlic, like onions, packs a powerful dose of flavor that lingers on your breath well after you’ve eaten it. Heck, you can brush your teeth and rinse your mouth out and it’ll still linger a little. Once consumed garlic enters the bloodstream  and absorbs the allyl methyl sulfide and creates an odor that seeps into your lungs and out of the orifice called your mouth. This flavor additive also emits its intoxicating scent from your pores as well. You might've walked out the house wearing Polo Black cologne, but before the night’s over you’ll be rocking Polo Garlic. Your best bet is to limit the amount of garlic in your dishes and brush and floss after the meal. Also, rinse your mouth out twice a day.

2. Onions

Hopefully you’re not going to White Castles on a date anyway, but if you do decide to attend the great and elegant WC Lounge (cool way of saying White Castle) listen up. The smell of onions intensifies anything that you’re eating. Onions contain sulfuric compounds that get absorbed into your bloodstream and spew out hot breathedness when in close or distant quarters leaving your date to question whether or not to leave you at the table or ask you if you suffer from halitosis. According to organics.org you can combat this by eating something minty, eating more vegetables, rinsing your mouth out with mustard and drinking green tea amongst other things.

3. Milk

Your tongue game has to be on point on a date. Let me clean that up for the dirty minds. If you aren't careful, eating ice cream, cheese rigatoni and pizza can leave your tongue mixing with the wrong type of crowd. The tongue contains bacteria that feeds on the amino acids in dairy products like milk and cheeses which contributes to funky stale milk breath.

4. Coffee

It’s a real “I’m cultured or I’m grown” thing to order a cup of coffee at the end of a date, but you’re putting someone else’s nostrils and your reputation at risk when you do so. The caffeine in coffee dries out your mouth which causes bad breath. Saliva is really important to your breath because it helps kill the bacteria in your mouth, and it helps digest the leftover food particles in your mouth. When coffee comes into the picture the saliva in your mouth decreases and the bacteria that causes bad breath goes buckwild.

5. Tuna Sandwiches

You can be a sucker for cornrows and manicured toes, but whatever you do, don’t be a sucker for corn chips and tuna sandwiches. Tuna smells. Flat out. This often canned product starts to smell even worse as it oxidizes. If you want to cut the smell of the tuna, pack it in extra virgin olive oil, but even then the funk will permeate through your lips and into the nostrils of your date.

6. Horseradish

This plant root is a natural defense against other animals because of its rotten smell. Just imagine what your date from Tinder is saying about you to her friends when you bite into your roast beef sandwich drenched in horseradish sauce. The active ingredient in horseradish is isothiocyanate, a chemical compound that makes your breath all hot and tart. To alleviate this problem rinse your mouth out twice a day, brush and floss as needed....and skip the horseradish.

We want to hear from you. What have you discovered is a no-no on dates?
