Over 2 Million Donuts Recalled: Including Dunkin’ Donuts!

More than 2 million pastries sold nationwide have been recalled for potential listeria contamination, according to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) report updated on Wednesday, February 5.

The Class II recall (which means that the product has a remote probability of causing serious health problems) includes a total of 2,017,614 cases and includes several varieties of doughnuts60 different products, which were distributed throughout the U.S. at places like Dunkin’ Donuts. On the list, you’ll find common donut favorites like Munchkins, coffee rolls, French crullers, and Bavarian donuts.

The voluntary recall began in January, though no press release was issued at the time—so it was first announced to the public on February 5. The recall was a precautionary measure based on non-product related findings in a FGF Brands facility in the U.S. and no food contact surfaces or donuts tested positive for listeria, according to a statement released by FGF Brands.

How Do You Know If You Got Sick from the Donuts?

So far, No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall, but that doesn’t mean that people still can’t get sick.

Listeria infection is a foodborne bacterial illness that can be very serious for pregnant women, people older than 65 and people with weakened immune systems. It’s most commonly caused by eating improperly processed deli meats and unpasteurized milk products.

Healthy people rarely become ill from listeria infection, but the disease can be fatal to unborn babies, newborns and people with weakened immune systems. Prompt antibiotic treatment can help curb the effects of listeria infection.

Listeria bacteria can survive refrigeration and even freezing. So people who are at higher risk of serious infections should avoid eating the types of food most likely to contain listeria bacteria.

Symptoms to Look For:

If you develop a listeria infection, you might have:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Muscle aches
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea

Symptoms might begin a few days after you’ve eaten contaminated food, but it can take 30 days or more before the first signs and symptoms of infection begin.

If the Infection Spreads, Symptoms Look Like This:

If the listeria infection spreads to your nervous system, signs and symptoms can include:

  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion or changes in alertness
  • Loss of balance
  • Convulsions

Symptoms during Pregnancy and in Newborns:

During pregnancy, a listeria infection is likely to cause only mild signs and symptoms in the mother. The consequences for the baby, however, can be devastating — the baby can die in the womb or have a life-threatening infection within a few days of being born.

Signs and symptoms of a listeria infection in a newborn can be subtle, but can include:

  • Little interest in feeding
  • Irritability
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Difficulty breathing

Spoiled Dough: Here’s How To Tell:

The most reliable way to tell if dough is spoiled is by smell; if it has a sour, off, or otherwise unpleasant odor, it’s best to discard it, as this indicates bacterial growth and potential food poisoning. Other signs include: visible mold, a slimy or overly wet texture, significant discoloration, and a very different appearance compared to fresh dough.

Key points to Remember:

  • Always smell before eating: Your nose is the best indicator of spoiled dough.
  • Look for mold: Visible mold growth on the dough is a clear sign to throw it away.
  • Check for texture changes: If the dough is excessively sticky, slimy, or watery, it may be spoiled.
  • Consider the storage time: If the dough has been stored for an extended period beyond its recommended shelf life, even if it looks okay, it may be unsafe to eat.
