Lisa Bonet: Living Life On Her Terms

Actress Lisa Bonet practically grew up right before our eyes on the small screen. Going from adolescence to adulthood on the hit 80's sitcom The Cosby Show, made Bonet a household name. On the TV show, she was a trendsetter in her style growing up and when she became a mom on the show. And in real life, she's the same: going against the trends in fashion and style, even after becoming mom to her first born, Zoe Kravitz.

At 16, Bonet landed a role on The Cosby Show; three years later she starred in the spin-off, A Different World. But a sexually suggestive performance in her 1987 film debut Angel Heart and risqué photo shoots in Interview and Rolling Stone magazines quickly tarnished her sweetheart status. She made more headlines when she wed rocker named Lenny Kravitz, had Zoë a year later and left A Different World.

Lisa still acts on film and television roles she chooses, including the hit Showtime series, Ray Donovan. She also focuses her attention on yoga, art and a second wave of motherhood. She and her recently-married husband, actor Jason Momoa, have two daughters, Lola and Nakoa-Wolf.

This new phase of life and entering into her 50's next year doesn't phase her at all. “The number itself feels irrelevant to me,” she says. “I look in the mirror and I see in this face all the life that has occurred.”

When it comes her health and beauty regime, the 50-year-old keeps it simple and natural. Bonet's go-to is coconut oil. In fact, it has been for a very long time--way before it became popular.

"I was using coconut oil before the current craze," explains Bonet. "It’s simple and pure. Why put a lotion on your body that has 10 ingredients when you can put on one that is from nature and smells divine and does the job?”

She doesn’t just eat coconut oil, however. She also uses it on her skin and hair to keep her looking young. Bonet says she uses coconut oil as a moisturizing body lotion.

"I’m all about putting food in my body that nourishes me," Bonet told The New York Times. "I used to be more skeptical about the gluten-free thing, but then my daughter Lola had a cough, and she’d wake up in the middle of the night. It got worse and worse, and the...

... doctor had to give her an inhaler. Well, my own doctor suggested maybe it’s gluten. We took the gluten away, and it’s been such a big change. I pay for a gluten-free sourdough bread that’s baked fresh every week. A typical breakfast at home would be seasoned bone broth from Real Food Devotee, scrambled eggs cooked in coconut oil and the sourdough bread toasted with raw butter."

"My favorite form of fitness is dance. I take an African dance class that I live for. I just walked in one day, and I have been doing it pretty regularly for seven years now. I also do Pilates twice a week, yoga once a week, and I go to the gym twice a week. I was a gymnast when I was very young. I ran track and field and cross-country when I was in school. I probably would have been an athlete if I hadn’t become an artist."
