In 2012, Jason Philpot went to his doctor for what he thought would be a routine physical. His doctor mentioned he had a heart murmur, generally considered harmless.

“Initially, we didn’t take it that serious because we didn’t see any signs of it causing any problem,” Brandi Philpot, Jason’s wife, said in a video for the American Heart Association. Within four months of learning he had a heart murmur, Jason says things started to go downhill very quickly.
“Every time my heart beat, it’s almost like my heart was jumping out of my chest.”
He had a pacemaker installed, two open heart surgeries and a life-threatening aneurysm.
The husband and father was only 39 at the time.
